My History as a Reader
Coming of age, our family, elders and siblings alike, never really took time to read aloud amongst one another, nor were we urged to read of our own volition. Once I became interested in reading, I started with the number one selling book of all time, The Bible. Now I am the elder and have children who live at home, my highly intellectual wife and I read to the younger prodigy and encourage them to read on their own, in hopes of enhancing their lives. I delighted in science fiction written in the past four decades and fictitious literature dating back two centuries. Books aside, I enjoy reading the dictionary, cookbooks, and map books from cover to cover. A wondrous pastime is listening to audio books while working around our house. The world is engulfed with wondrous books, and we are extremely busy as the indigenous life forms of this planet, so Audiobooks (unabridged) can be very entertaining and enlightening.
Fictitious books seemed unrequired across the tenure of my academic career. The only delving into fiction, I can remember, is Of Mice and Men. If I had been enlightened in any kind of reading comprehension, it was elementary. Yet, I do read books and articles word for word and have never had much use for skimming. I have been told that my comprehension and retention level is surpassed by few, even though it takes me somewhat longer to read. Perhaps this very reason is how I was able to get through my middle school and high school years.
I feel interested to be educated further in the art or reading comprehension and trying to learn new ways of understanding the written word. In the past (and now) I am locked in a battle with dyslexia and poor vision. Also, my family spent time in many different states when I was young. Various parts of the country taught diverse ways of understanding English in the past. Standardized testing had not been as widespread as it is now. The transplanting, due to my father gaining better employment utilizing his engineering degree, seemed necessary, but my mother never attended college.

Timeline of Clinton D. Wells
My birth took place in Bradford, PA on the early morning of March 4th, 1973, in a blizzard. My first remembrances were of the tortured affiliation between my sister and me. With the knowledge I am younger, there were times where she would leave me in deep pits, lock me in the basement with the lights off or push me into the road on snowy days. Yet, we get along now, and I know she has genuine grievances about me also. These actions took place in Marshburg, PA between the years 1973 to 1978.
From Marshburg we lived in many places. We moved to Kannapolis, NC first. Then another place in Kannapolis, NC, where I attended first and second grade. Here I wrote my first published work. There was a contest for someone to write a story and the one published would win a year membership to the YMCA. Excited to have won the membership and been published in the newspaper, I asked my mother to transport me to the Y and drop me off quite frequently. This Y had pool tables, foosball tables, a pool, a duckpin bowling alley and a huge library. I loved spending time in the library.
Next, my family and I moved to Ridgefield, CT, Marion, VA, and Lexington, SC, outside Columbia. By the sixth grade, around age 11, the year 1984, my family and I moved to Suffolk, VA. At first, we were downtown and later, moved to an area by the Nansemond River. My family stayed in this neighborhood for the next six years. Living here, in 1987, I met a girl named Charlotte Whitmore (Charlie). We became great friends and hung out every day. This acquaintance will become much more important later.
In 1991, at age 17, my family and I moved into a house in Chuckatuck, an area of Suffolk VA, near Smithfield. Then, I graduated from High school started classes at TCC. Soon after my father, mother, and I built this dream home and moved into it, my father passed away.
In 1993 at age 21, I married a girl I had known for approximately five years and bought a house in Portsmouth. While there I learned the sting of betrayal from my then wife and after two and a half years, had to move on. So, my first divorce was in 1996, followed by a marriage in 1997 and oddly enough, we lived in the house in Chuckatuck. This marriage bore me my only biological child, Madison Wells, born September 4th, 1998. In 2000 we moved to Michigan, where I built a house and lived for three years and realized I didn’t like snow as an adult. In my time in Michigan I had a moment of intellectual growth and learned that I loved Charlie, and I always would. Everyone I knew or met would be held to a standard based on how I felt about her. After three years, my family and I moved back into the house in Chuckatuck.
The year 2003, I am married to a woman that doesn’t love me and I do not love. My 2nd wife's attitude toward life, child raising, and marriage have changed drastically. She tells me that she thinks we should get a separation, and utilizing a phrase from her birth father, I told her, "that’s unfortunate, when can you leave?". Yadda, yadda, yadda, we aren’t together.
Over these next few years (2003-2005), I spent time talking to Charlie, which was denied by my wives and her husband. Charlie and I reconnected and had lunch a few times. One day I was invited to a party at Charlie’s house, and after the rest of the guests left, our kids played in the yard, we looked through photo albums and reminisced over family and friends and she told me her marriage was about to end. Of course, she had my total support and after talking a little treason, we are together.
So, in 2007 I married the love of my life and started a home improvement business. We are so happy together and enjoy living with mutual respect. In 2009 we moved to Texas, to be close to Charlie’s Mother and spent 5 years there while we remodeled the house we bought. Her Mother tragically dies just as we are about to move back to VA. Our plan was to have her move back with us and live with us.
Finally, in 2014 we move back to VA and live in Williamsburg. We buy a house and live here with our children. We have started to further our educations; Charlie is studying to be a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and I a paralegal. The year is 2018.
