My name is John Stone, and I currently serve as president of MGCC Educational Foundation. I graduated from MGCC in 1975, then transferred to VA Tech, where I received my bachelor's degree in Business in 1977. I joined my father Med Stone, in the insurance business that Summer and was an agent for Nationwide Insurance for 41 years. Upon retirement from Nationwide, I became an independent agent for Loudon Mutual Insurance, where I am semi-retired and specialize in property insurance. I enjoy bird hunting with my dogs each Fall, and in the Spring, I have a passion for turkey hunting. I have been a life-long member of Temple Baptist Church in Covington, serving as a deacon and member of several committees. I also enjoy singing in a gospel group, Narrow Road. My wife Sheryl and I are grandparents to four grandchildren.
MGCC allowed me to live at home and receive an affordable college education while working part-time, then enabled me to transfer to VA Tech to finish my degree. Honestly, the two years at MGCC were more memorable and personal than my two years at VA Tech!
Hi! My name is Katie Wrenn.
I am the librarian at Mountain Gateway Community College. I assist students with their research needs using the library's various print and online resources. I maintain the library's online presence, providing access to databases and working with faculty to create research guides for student use. I also coordinate the library's laptop loan program, which benefits students who don't have access to a personal laptop.
I attended Hollins University and received my bachelor's in English with minors in Sociology and Communications. I later received my Master of Library and Information Science degree with a concentration in digital libraries from Rutgers University. I began working at MGCC Library in 2015 as a volunteer and transitioned to full-time in 2016. I grew up in Clifton Forge and live here with my husband Jonothan, and pit-bull Zeppelin. In my free time, I love to read and see live music!
I enjoy working at the MGCC Library because I get to work with students, faculty, staff and members of the community. Because we are smaller in size, we are able to more easily connect with each of our library patrons. I love helping our students with research needs, using our technology, or even just providing a quiet space to study.
Hi! I’m Kirby Peters.
I am the College Navigator at MGCC. I came to work here in Spring of 2021 as a Financial Aid Technical Assistant and transitioned into this role in Fall of 2022. I have enjoyed working with students to help with financial aid and getting them started with admission and enrollment. I know that the process of starting college, whether it be straight out of high school or not, can be intimidating and I want to help make that process as easy as possible.
I attended MGCC after high school and I tell anyone I can that it was the best decision I could have made for myself. I was unsure what my future plans were and coming here helped me explore some options until I was ready to move on to Radford University where I received my Bachelor’s degree. Clifton Forge is my home and I love the sense of community and belonging I feel here. I have 3 Boston Terriers that keep me busy, and when I’m not entertaining them I am making pottery or knitting.
MGCC is a wonderful place to start your academic journey. We are able to get to know each student and spend the time with them to discover what the best path will be.
Hi, I’m Ashley Pratt.
I am an Assistant Professor and Program Head for Mathematics and Education at Mountain Gateway Community College. I also serve as one of the advisors for Phi Theta Kappa, our honor society. I am so blessed to be able to share my passion for mathematics, teaching, and learning.
I grew up in Conyers, GA (just east of Atlanta) but relocated to Roanoke in 2011 after finishing my B.S. in Mathematics from Longwood University and my M.A. in Teaching from North Carolina State University. My mother graduated from Clifton Forge High School and my grandmother taught history at Alleghany High School, so I feel connected to this region and am so happy to get to serve this community and enjoy the natural beauty of this area.
I love working at MGCC because the small size allows us to build a strong community. We have a great team, and I have I enjoyed being a part of it. I am so proud of what our students are accomplishing and the hard work that all of the faculty and staff dedicate to help our students succeed.
Hello, I’m Holly Fasig
I am the Career Coach for Mountain Gateway Community College. I work with local high schools to facilitate career exploration and create career plans. I also work as a liaison between the high schools and MGCC. It is exciting to be able to help young people decide their path and what steps to take after high school.
Before coming to work at Mountain Gateway I worked in special education for 6 years in various capacities. I attended MGCC/DSLCC and am now working to complete my Bachelor’s in Behavioral Health Science. I grew up in Cleveland, Tennessee and married my husband Josh in 2005. We moved to Alleghany County in 2010 and that is where we still reside today. We love living in the country and having our farm animals which include chickens, ducks and geese. We have two boys ages 15 and 11 who play tons of sports and keep us extremely busy. We never have a dull moment.
I have always enjoyed working with students and I am very excited that I can now assist them in achieving their long-term goals. Mountain Gateway is a wonderful place to work and attend with faculty and staff who go above and beyond every day. It is a joy to be a part of this team!

Summer 2022
Hello, I’m Robert Short.
I wear multiple hats here at Mountain Gateway. I am a tutor in the Achievement Center, an Adjunct Faculty member, and I serve on the Faculty Committee.
I am originally from Hurt, Virginia, but lived most of my life in Lynchburg. I joined the Army the week I graduated from Brookville High School (Go Bees!) and served two tours in Iraq (2007-2008 and 2009-2010) where I earned my CIB. Afterwards, I worked for a military contractor outside of DC and then for the City of Lynchburg in the Water Department. I then attended Liberty University (Go Flames!) for my B.S. in Accounting.
A few years later, I was hired by Westrock to be a Senior Financial Analyst. I left that position to work on my MBA from Western Governors University (Go Owls!) during which time I was the color commentator for Alleghany High School football radio broadcasts. After graduating, I took what I thought would be a temporary position at Dabney/Mountain Gateway CC and fell in love with teaching and have been here for the last four years.
