Animal Behaviour and Welfare Laboratory
The Animal Behavior and Welfare Lab, led by principal investigator Dr. Yi-Chun Lin, is a dynamic research group based at National Chung Hsing University. The lab focuses on advancing our understanding of animal welfare and behavior through various innovative research projects.
The lab's research portfolio is diverse and focuses on both farm and companion animals. Here's an overview of the current study projects being undertaken:
Slow-Growth Poultry Humane Slaughter: This project investigates the slaughter practices of slow-growth poultry breeds, aiming to enhance the humane aspects of processing and potentially improve meat quality.
Exposure to Heat Stress and Its Impact on the Welfare of Dairy Calves: This study assesses the effects of early-life heat stress on dairy calves, examining both immediate and long-term welfare implications, including growth performance and health outcomes.
Investigating the Effect of Housing System on the Coccidiosis Prevalence in Layers: This research explores how different housing systems affect the prevalence and control of coccidiosis in laying hens, which could lead to improved management practices and better welfare standards.
Perching Behavior of Hens and Its Implication on Welfare: By studying the perching behaviors of hens, this project aims to understand the welfare implications and how these behaviors impact hen health and productivity in various housing systems.
Dog Body Condition and Relevant Factors: This project looks into the factors affecting body condition in dogs, focusing on the prevalence of obesity, its underlying causes, and its management.
Evaluating the Beneficial Effects of Lactic Acid Bacteria in Dog Aging: This study assesses the potential health benefits of lactic acid bacteria supplements in aging dogs, particularly looking at markers of health and longevity.
Dog Problematic Behavior and Training Methods: Focused on improving the understanding of canine behavior, this research evaluates different training methods to address problematic behaviors, aiming to enhance the human-animal bond and animal welfare.
Under the leadership of Dr. Yi-Chun Lin, the lab not only contributes to scientific knowledge but also emphasizes the practical application of research findings to improve animal welfare standards. The lab's work is pivotal in shaping contemporary practices and policies in animal management and welfare, making significant impacts in both academic and real-world settings.
