Where Are They Now?
By Fernando Neto
Over December break, staff reporter Fernando Neto caught up with some recently graduated MHS students to see what they've been up to.
Thais Nakao: Thais Nakao is a freshman at Bridgewater State University. She chose BSU because of the excellent teaching program. Thais majors in Elementary education and loves working with kids. Attending BSU meant that some of her friends wouldn’t be there, but going to this school would also mean being able to do what she loves and has a real passion for as her job.
What is your favorite thing to do on campus? Tailgating football games with my friends.
Could describe your college self versus her high school self in one word each: unmotivated (in high school) and confident (in college).
What advice would you give current high school students looking to attend college? Try harder, focus more in school, and try your best in everything you need to accomplish.
What problem did you overcome in high school versus college? In high school, it took me so long to realize nobody cares. In college, I realized that not everybody will like me, and I had to become more willing to make friends.
Lucia Nakao: Lucia Nakao is a senior in college at Assumption University in Worcester, Massachusetts. Lucia didn’t choose her major until the summer before her senior year and finally settled on Criminology. The deciding factor was that she wanted to reinforce good in the world and help others.
What is your favorite thing to do on campus? Eating at Chuck's (a food place on campus) with friends and going to basketball games
What impacts did COVID-19 have on your high school experience? The impact was hard going into her sophomore year because of masks; it was weird because of the impact it already had on her freshman year (being online)
What advice would you give others before attending college? Try your best; not everything will come easy.
Would you consider switching to a different college? No, the college I attend has good memories, and the friends I made here had a good impact on me.
Sarah Concough: Sarah is a freshman at Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT. Sarah decided that she wanted to try something new and ended up double majoring in commerce and marketing, and she loves it.
How is college different from high school? College is very different from high school in the sense that you have a lot more work that you have to do. College is also very different from high school because you get much more independence, and teachers are much more separate from students but still available if you need help.
If you could have any superpower what would it be? The ability to teleport.
What are your thoughts about college? I love college so far and encourage everyone to give college a shot because it’s worth it.
