Medfield Public Schools
Elementary Mathematics Curriculum Review & Adoption
2021-2023
2021-2023
In Summer 2021, Medfield Public Schools elementary educators kicked off our process of adopting a new elementary math curriculum. That June, teams of Medfield teachers and administrators met to evaluate curriculum options for our PK-5 mathematics program. Throughout this process, educators worked together to discuss each option and to decide collaboratively which of the options would be piloted in 2022-2023.
Through this process, we aimedto select a curriculum that reflects our district's mission:
The Medfield Public School System will create a dynamic and collegial learning environment. Curriculum and instruction will guide students to achieve high standards and to meet the challenge of change. Through school, family, and community partnerships, students will be prepared to become responsible, sensitive, contributing citizens and lifelong learners.
There are several distinct phases of the curriculum review process:
Over the course of three days, teams of teachers thoroughly reviewed eight curriculum options that were recommended by Edreports and/or respected elementary math organizations. Within this process, two different rubrics were used to illuminate the curriculum's rigor, accessibility/inclusion, usability, and more. Curriculum options were narrowed down from eight...to four... down to two. A few months later, we revisited Edreports and CURATE and added one additional curriculum program to the pilot.
During Spring 2022, preparation took place to prepare for the 2022-2023 Mathematics Pilot. Specific steps included:
a) Notification of faculty of pilot status
b) Determination of pilot groups & preparation group
c) Determination of units
d) Identification of support material needs
Prep work commenced and included pilot teacher training and the development of support materials (scope/sequence guide, benchmark assessments, etc.).
From September-April, a team of three elementary teachers from each grade (PK-5) will pilot one-two units from each of the three curriculum finalists. (PK will pilot one of the three curriculum packages). Once all curricula are piloted and evaluated, final recommendations will be made.
