Parents,
Below is a list of activities you can do with your child at home over the next two weeks. They are related to our insect theme and will help reinforce skills we have been using at school. Please take time each day to do one of the activities with your child. I know they will love learning and sharing their knowledge with you. Mrs. Nicol and I would love to see pictures if you have the opportunity to take any. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
Week One
Take a walk to look for insects outside and discuss what you find. Count the number of bugs you see as walk. You can use a piece of paper to keep tally marks. Take pictures of the insects you find for tomorrow’s activity!
Use the pictures you took to draw the insects. Color them. Point out the different parts of the bugs (head, thorax, abdomen, 6 legs, antennas)
Make a ladybug. You can use a paper plate, a bowl, a white piece of paper and cut out a circle. Get creative. Add antennas, legs, and spots on your lady bug. Again, get creative. The legs/antennas can be sticks, cut up strips of paper, pipe cleaners, or any loose parts you have at home.
Take a field trip to your local library. Find books in the children’s section related to insects. Look through the books with your children and point of insects you saw on your walk.
If you have shaving cream at home, use a tray or a flat, surface such as a table to practice writing letters in your shaving cream. Help your child come up with as many letters as they can. See if they can spell their name in the shaving cream. If you don’t have shaving cream, you can use sand, dirt, paint, salt, any type of grain.
Week Two
Use loose parts around the home or from outside to create bugs. Use sticks, leaves, grass, rocks, etc. Help your child create an insect. Use pictures from books or insect pictures online as inspiration.
Watch the Hungry Caterpillar in ASL: https://youtu.be/6H7wKXINZ4A. Help your child draw a picture of their favorite stage of the life cycle from the story (small caterpillar, big caterpillar, cocoon, butterfly).
Take another field trip to your local library. Find books in the children’s section related to insects. See if you can find the Hungry Caterpillar. Take time to look through the book and discuss what they remember from the sign aloud. Take a picture reading your book and send to Miss Sydney and Mrs. Nicol.
Pretend you are an insect and act it out. Do you hop? Do you crawl? Do you fly? Do you do all three?! Take a video of your child and send it to Miss Sydney and Mrs. Nicol! so we can talk about their creativity when we come back to school.
Help your child collect sticks outside. Try to create as many letters using the sticks as you can.
