Abstract


John Walsh is a Senior Lecturer in Irish at the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, NUI Galway, Co-Director of the Centre for Applied Linguistics and Multilingualism (CALM) and Co-Director of the MSc in Applied Multilingualism. For the past decade he has been researching "new speakers" of minority languages, people who were not raised speaking those languages but who speak them fluently and regularly. Other areas of expertise are minority language media, language policy, multilingualism, language and sexuality and language and socioeconomic development. Before coming to NUI Galway, Dr Walsh worked for the European Bureau for Lesser Used Languages in Brussels and as a journalist with public broadcasters RTÉ and TG4 and with local and national independent radio.
