1:1 Student Technology

1:1 Digital Learning Initiative

At the May 5, 2015, Board of Education Meeting, the 1 to 1 Digital Learning Initiative pilot program was approved. A 1 to 1Digital Learning program adds a technology device to each student’s repertoire of learning tools. Students carry this device with them from class to class, and often, from school to home. The general purpose of 1 to 1 programs is often to provide teachers and students electronic means to access resources, textbooks, creative and productive tools, and to streamline communication. Elwood School’s 1 to 1 program purpose, goals, and expectations are not much different. Many school districts across the country have adopted 1 to 1 programs; all of which are customized to their students’ needs. The device chosen by Elwood School’s 1 to 1 committee is the Lenovo Chromebook 11e. Students will be assigned to a school-purchased Chromebook. One Chromebook will be assigned to each student for the entire school year. Chromebooks will be turned-in at school-year’s end for summer maintenance.

A committee was formed in the Fall of 2014 to discuss, plan, and prepare for a 1 to 1 program for piloting at the 6th Grade level for the 2015-2016 school year. This committee has discussed at length how a 1 to 1 program would look and function at Elwood, and the benefits it would provide. This committee shared viewpoints from all who will be involved:  teachers, students, technology staff, administration, and parents.

The 2015-2016 6th Grade class was the piloting group.

Parents are required to read and agree to the 1:1 Handbook and the Acceptable Use Policy on an annual basis during registration. This orientation covers why we issue Chromebooks to students, how Chromebooks work, what Chromebooks are used for, how Chromebooks are filtered and monitored, and more.
