Course Objective & Requirements

United States History and Government is a one-year course that is mandated by New York State. The course studies the growth of America, from colonial times until the present. The course is designed to help students achieve a clear understanding of the major ideas, themes, developments, and turning points that have taken place throughout the history of America. Students are required to take the United States History and Government Regents Examination at the end of the course in June.

GRADING

"All Social Studies teachers use a "total points" method for determining grades, that is, the total points earned divided by the total points available represents a percentage which represents the student's grade for the quarter. For this course, 50% of the total quarter points will come from EXAMS while approximately 10% of the total points will come from HOMEWORK. Approximately 40% of the total points will come from ASSIGNMENTS. Total points available and these percentages are approximate and may deviate depending upon the length of the quarter, the extent of the material covered and the methods the teacher determines is most appropriate to best assess the material in question. The instructor will make clear to students whether an activity that is scheduled will be counted in the ‘EXAM’ category or the ‘ASSIGNMENT’ category"

HOMEWORK/ASSIGNMENTS

Homework and assignments are vital to class instruction. Homework assignments will be posted in class and on the classroom website (located on the district’s webpage). Late homework will not be accepted and can not be made up. Be sure to copy down the homework and check the website on a regular basis.

EXTRA HELP

Extra help is available after school by appointment or during a common free period. Students should sign up a few days before they would like to come in. Students should come prepared with questions.

MAKING UP WORK

In the event that you are legally absent from class, it is your responsibility to make up the work (or test/quiz) that you have missed. You can find the homework assignment on the class website or a friend in the class. Any work that is not made up after a week's time is an automatic zero. If you have any questions or concerns during the time of your absence, please do not hesitate to call the school or send me an email! Any work missed due to an illegal absence is an automatic zero. Make sure you review the school's attendance policy regarding legal and illegal absences.
