This year we will be reading a broad range of texts. We will explore and navigate through wonderful literature --fiction and nonfiction, poetry, and drama including Warriors Don't Cry, Uprising, and many short stories. Some of our reading selections connect to the social studies curriculum in order to help students gain a broader perspective of the human experience during historical events. However, most reading choices will be made by the students with teacher guidance to match their personal interests and current reading level. Reading will be done both in and outside of class. Close and careful reading strategies will be learned and practiced all year. We will also be working hard to strengthen our research and writing skills. Students will learn how to make strong evidence-based claims, increase their level of analysis, use and analyze writing techniques/craft moves in addition to improving their knowledge of vocabulary and the rules of grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and usage.
