ELL

(English Language Learner)

Class

Welcome

March 2019

Welcome to the ELL webpage. Thank you for your interest. My name is Mrs. Joyce Yau-Kun.

At Emmaus, I teach ELL (English Language Learner) classes here on campus and I am also the Attendance Registrar. In addition to that, I run the Testing program for our K-8 students.

A little about Me

I was born and raised in San Gabriel Valley, California. I attended California State Polytechnic University (Cal Poly Pomona) for my Bachelor's Degree, and Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego for my Master's Degree. I graduated with straight A's (high honors). My Clear Credential in English-Education was obtained through UCLA. In my spare time, I like to travel and study the Arts.

A little about our English-Language Program:

We work with students who have needs in the English language. Classes are formed by the grade level. (Grades 1-8).

We have a school wide A.R. (Accelerated Reading) program. For the last five years, it has been successful and an immense help for our students. Therefore, we will continue using it this year.

Besides teaching students according to English - California State Standards (Vocabulary, Reading, Writing, Verbal communication), they also learn about the Love of Jesus Christ and about the American Culture. Our goal and focus is to help students (who have English needs / and International Students) to assimilate into the American Culture seamlessly and succeed to their fullest potential.

A little about Attendance:

  • Attendance is recorded weekly via the Gradelink website.
  • Please call the office directly if your student is unable to attend school that day.

A little about our Testing Program

Testing is done three times a year. Students test via the NWEA application on Chromebook laptops. Students will be tested on Reading, Language, and Math. Lower grade students (K-2nd) will be testing in Fluency reading.

Lastly...

If you have any questions or would like to know more about our programs, feel free to email me at Jyau- kun@emmausalhambra.org or call our school to learn more. We always welcome new students to join us. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

God Bless you.

With Love,

Mrs. Joyce Yau-Kun, M.A.
