Earned an ‘A’ or ‘B’ in all prior English courses OR have a teacher recommendation
AND
Completed one year of Advanced Journalism OR completed Journalism & New Media 1 prior to senior year.

Students enrolled in the Advanced Journalism course gain practical, hands-on experience in all aspects of Common Core English Language Arts standards, including argumentative and analytical writing, rhetorical and stylistic analysis, public speaking and debate, to name a few. Students learn effective communication techniques, specifically the importance of rhetorical context and how use to language effectively in various rhetorical situations. In addition to building and refining skills in analysis and rhetoric, students also gain hands-on experience in media literacy. Not only do they analyze and evaluate various types of media and journalistic writing, but they also produce it, including news and sports reporting, feature and editorial writing, online publishing. As part of the Advanced Journalism class, students are part of the newspaper or yearbook staff, where students apply the literacy, critical thinking, problem-solving, time management and organization skills that professional publications require. This course requires teamwork, responsibility, accountability and a rigorous devotion to deadlines. Applications for Advanced Journalism are available in room A315 during the second semester for the upcoming school year.
