Literacy Standards For First Grade
Our district's literacy instruction focuses on the Common Core literacy standards. We focus on specific standards and use resources such as Schoolwide to teach these standards. The standards cover both literature (fiction) and informational (non-fiction) texts. We cover these standards throughout the entire year. The main standards we focus on include:
Reading Foundational Skills: Year Long
RF.1.3 - Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words
RF 1.3g - Reads common high frequency words with automaticity
Reading Literature (Fiction) Skills: Trimester 1 & 3
RL.1.1 - Ask and answer questions about key details in a fiction text
RL.1.2 - Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrates understanding of their central message or lesson
RL.1.3 - Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details
RL.1.10/RI.1.10 - With prompting and support, read prose,poetry, and informational text of appropriate complexity for grade 1
Reading Informational (Nonfiction) Skills: Trimester 2 & 3
RI.1.1- Ask and answer questions about key details in a text
RI.1.2 - Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text
Writing:
W.1.3 - Write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide some sense of closure (Trimester 1)
W.1.2 - Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure (Trimester 2)
W.1.1 - Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure (Trimester 3)
