Standards
Below are the standards that will be focused on and reviewed in each of the levels of language. Generally, language acquisition occurs through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. At District 205, we assess acquisition through the use of the three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational. Each mode of communication is practiced and refined through specific "I can" statements, or objectives. These objectives will be discussed and shown repeatedly throughout the year.

Standards-Based Grading
To the left, please find frequently asked questions and a helpful explanation of Standards-Based Learning (SBL).
Although letter grades appear on PowerSchool for all grades, the standards are assessed and input into PowerSchool by the teacher using SBL.
Please view the SBL report for each assignment on PowerSchool. The explanation for the values given for SBL reporting can be found on the second page of the PDF attached to the left. This explanation provides a deeper understanding of your child's standing in Spanish class.
Modes of Communication
In all levels of Spanish, students are assessed on their understanding of the language using the modes of communication. These modes include interpersonal, presentational, and interpretive communication. In order to showcase the strengthening of their skills in the target language, students are given opportunities throughout the year to display these modes of communication independently and with minimal assistance.
More specifically, the modes are strengthened and assessed in the following ways:
Students are able to
interpersonal (speaking)
orally communicate their ideas to others effectively, using a variety of vocabulary
be understood using appropriate pronunciation of words
pursue and maintain conversations about specific topics being discussed
presentational (speaking and writing)
provide written examples of the language, using correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling
use resources and vocabulary provided to expand on topics introduced in class
independently communicate ideas in the target language
interpretive (reading, listening, and viewing)
understand the information presented in the target language in written, video, and audio format
effectively answer questions based on the information presented
reflect on the resources and provide potential expansion of ideas
