To support your child with their Literacy Learning...

***READ TOGETHER EVERY DAY! Take turns reading to each other and consider using this Family Reading Resource to help you ask questions/discuss the book.

***TALK to them every day! Put the technology down, turn the TV off and just chat. Studies show that the more we talk to kids, the more we increase their vocabulary which puts them at an advantage when learning to read and write.

***When your child is writing at home, encourage them to sound out the words and try their best. It is okay if they do not spell all the words correctly, at this age it is important for children to try to hear the sounds in the words and build confidence to use a variety of words as they write.

Literacy Curricular Resources

Schoolwide Reading Workshop: Schoolwide Reading Fundamentals serves as our materials for Reading Workshop. Within the Reading Workshop teachers use mentor text from Schoolwide to model a reading comprehension standard in the mini-lesson. Teachers then ask the students to apply their learning from the mini-lesson to their independent reading. During this time the teacher meets with students in small groups and for 1:1 conferences in order to coach the students as readers.

Lucy Calkins Writing Units of Study: Lucy Calkins Writing Units of Study serves as our materials for Writing Workshop. Within the Writing Workshop teachers use genre topics and mini-lessons from the units of study to model the writing process. Teachers then ask the students to apply their learning from the mini-lesson to their independent writing. During this time the teacher meets with students in small groups and for 1:1 conferences in order to coach the students as writers.

Words Their Way: Words their Way is a research-based program that takes students through a series of five stages of spelling and orthographic development. Teachers use reproducible sorts for independent and small group word study for each stage of spelling development, from emergent through derivational relations. For the 20-21 school year, teachers have the option to try the digital version of this program.

(Optional Pilot 20-21 School Year) The Next Step Forward in Word Study and Phonics: Some teachers are piloting this word study program for the 20-21 school year. This program assesses the level of the students word study ability and guides teachers to embed word study into their small group reading instruction.
