This introductory course provides a foundation in digital imaging through hands-on exploration of both raster-based and vector-based tools using industry-standard software, including Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Students will learn essential skills in image editing, composition, and design, gaining a strong understanding of digital workflows used in professional visual communication. In Adobe Photoshop, students will explore image correction, retouching, compositing, and the use of layers, masks, and adjustments to enhance and manipulate photographic content. In Adobe Illustrator, students will be introduced to vector graphics, learning how to create scalable artwork, logos, and illustrations using shape-building tools, paths, typography, and color systems. Projects will reinforce the integration of raster and vector elements, encouraging students to think creatively while mastering the technical aspects of each program.
This course offers an engaging and professional learning experience of the fundamentals of video production. Students will work collaboratively and independently while learning relevant industry skills such as sound design, studio lighting, film editing, and more. Students are empowered to enhance their visual communication skills by writing original scripts, creating storyboards, and filming/editing video projects. The curriculum will focus on film and TV history through contemporary media including news broadcasting to short personalized videos for social media.
Prerequisites: Digital Imaging & Design I
This intermediate course builds on foundational Digital Imaging I skills, refining technical abilities and visual language using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom, and InDesign. Students will explore advanced techniques in image editing, vector artwork, layout design, and digital publishing, including compositing, retouching, and non-destructive editing in Photoshop, precision vector work in Illustrator, multi-page design in InDesign, and photo editing in Lightroom. Projects will integrate raster and vector elements, emphasizing visual storytelling, client-based challenges, and portfolio development, while also covering file management, resolution, color correction, and prepress preparation for both print and web. Critical thinking and peer critique will support students’ growth as digital artists and communicators.
Prerequisites: Digital Imaging & Design I
This advanced studio course pushes students to master digital imaging through ambitious projects that blend technical precision with creative innovation. Building on prior experience from Digital Imaging I and II, students will engage in complex, concept-driven assignments that simulate real-world design and imaging scenarios. Emphasis will be placed on advanced compositing, typographic integration, dynamic layout systems, branding, and motion graphics fundamentals. Students will work with layered file structures, nondestructive workflows, and cross-platform design strategies to create polished, portfolio-ready work. The course fosters independent thinking, iterative design processes, and client-based problem solving, with opportunities for exhibition, publication, and competition. Peer critique, artist research, and industry-standard practices will support students as they refine their artistic voice and prepare for post-secondary pathways in visual arts, media, and design.
