Transportation Eligibility
Transportation services are provided to students who live two or more miles from their home campus, according to the school board policy. Please review the Resolution Regarding Hazardous Routes on the Transportation main page if you have any questions.
Arrive at Pick-Up 5 - 10 Minutes Early
Times provided reflect the expected time the bus should arrive during good weather. Inclement weather and/or traffic congestions may cause the route to run later than the provided time. We ask that students be at their designated bus stop 5 - 10 minutes prior to the scheduled pick-up.
Arriving early ensures students remain in a direct line-of-site between the bus driver and themselves as well as discourages students from "chasing" the bus and entering the danger zone.
You can also turn on notifications in SMARTtag Parent Portal. When you are registered to receive notifications you will get text messages daily with estimated times of arrival.
What determines bus eligibility?
Am I eligible? Your child may be eligible to ride if:
1. You live 2 or more miles from your child’s designated campus.
Please Note: Elgin ISD uses a computerized routing and mapping system as the standard by which all eligibility measurements are made. The shortest path on public roadways is measured between the midpoint of a home address and the flagpole at the school. For apartment complexes, the measurement point is the property line closest to the school.
2. Your child is a registered Elgin ISD student and your address is up to date with the registrar.
Please note: Your student can only be routed to the address indicated in Ascender/Parent Portal, so please ensure that information is kept current.
Your bus stop can be found utilizing the Find My Bus Stop. When you enter your student’s address, be sure to include the street suffix abbreviation exactly as is on the street sign (St, LN, CT, pkwy, CV, WAY, TRL, Dr, etc.). If your street address includes a direction (east, west, north or south, include the first letter of the direction (example: E. 8th St.).
Why does my address not appear when I search the SMARTtag Find my bus?
Make sure to include the street suffix abbreviation (st, ln, ct, pkwy, etc.) but do not spell out “street”, “lane”, etc. and do not enter a zip code. If your address still does not appear, please call the Transportation Department at (512) 281-5751 for further assistance.
It takes 48 school hours to process, once your student is fully registered at their campus. It may take longer when a student receives special needs transportation. The transportation department will need the IEP paperwork that states the student is eligible for special needs transportation. If your student uses a car seat, booster seat, harness or any other safety equipment, we must have the safety equipment before we start transporting the student.
My child has significant behavioral needs and needs support on the bus. Does the school district need to provide support services on the bus?
Yes. If transportation is part of the IEP, then support services must be provided.
Your child should arrive at the stop at least 10 minutes before the scheduled pick up time. If there is a substitute driver, there is a chance the bus could be a few minutes late. Please understand the times may not be absolutely consistent with the regular scheduled pickup times due to traffic, weather, and other unforeseen occurrences. If the bus is late, ask your child to remain at the stop. There may be incidents beyond our control but there will always be a bus at every stop. If the wait becomes extreme (approximately 20 minutes), please call the Transportation Dispatch office at (512) 281-5751 ext. 1255. Buses will load students and depart the stop. Regular buses do not wait for late students. Special needs transportation follows much the same criteria but will wait up to 2 minutes at the stop.
All buses will wait no more than 8 minutes at the school (unless otherwise instructed by campus administrator) in the afternoon for students to board. Students are expected to proceed immediately to the buses. Bus drivers are instructed not to stop, or open, the door for late students due to safety concerns.
My student says their bus is hot. I thought all buses were equipped with AC?
All of our buses are equipped with AC, and our drivers are instructed to continuously run the AC to keep the bus as cool as possible. However, Texas is known for its high temperatures, and as we open and close the door repeatedly to allow students on and off the bus, the cool air is released, making it hard to maintain a low bus temperature.
We appreciate your patience as we do everything within our power to keep your student(s) cool during those high- temperature days.
What if my child misses the bus?
Should a student miss the bus, it becomes the responsibility of the parent/guardian to provide transportation to/from school. Never "chase" the bus. The bus can not return to the bus stop or bus loop.
What happens if I'm not at the bus stop to receive my child after school?
An adult or older sibling is required to be at the bus stop for Pre-K and Kindergarten students only. However, drivers are expected to use their best judgement when releasing a child without an adult present if there is normally someone there to receive the child from the bus.
What do I need to do if I have a change of address?
If your child's pick up or delivery address has changed, please contact the campus registrar to update your address.
How is discipline handled on the bus?
In the event of a disciplinary issue on the bus, the bus driver will write a Bus Conduct Referral. This referral is submitted to the Student Management Specialist who will review the referral and any audio/video prior to any disciplinary action being taken. At the completion of the investigation, Student Management will contact the parent/guardian regarding the issue.
What is SMART tag?
SMARTtag is a system designed to increase the safety and security of students who use school bus transportation. Each of our buses is outfitted with a tablet equipped with a Radio Frequency Identification reader, mobile connectivity, and Global Positional System (GPS).
My student lost his/her SMARTtag (bus tag), what do I do?
In the event your student loses his/her SMARTtag, they will need to purchase a new one at their home campus. Your student may also speak to his/her teacher to request for a new one. A new SMARTtag is $5.00. Students will get their SMARTtag from their respected campus. Reminder, tags are required for all riders.
