The 9-12 Crew Curriculum lessons were designed based on having approximately 8-16 students per Crew, and follows the guidance recommended in the We Are Crew book for setting up Crew at the secondary level:
Crew meets at least 3 days per week, preferably daily.
Crews are composed of 8-16 students.
Crew leaders are teachers and sometimes other professional staff (e.g. administrators, counselors).
Crew meetings run for 20-60 minutes (our Crew Curriculum lessons are designed for use in 30 minutes).
The 9-12 Crew Curriculum lessons are designed as month-long topics of four weeks in length. Within each week, there are three lessons of 30-minutes a piece. For optimal experience, and to allow us to gain your feedback, we ask that you complete as many lessons as possible. Here are a few other recommendations:
If you have more time per week: we designed three lessons a week so that Crew leaders could utilize one or two other days per week on personal/academic advisory support for students in their Crew.
If you have other days for Crew beyond our three lessons, we suggest you utilize that time for advisory support to help students on their high school and postsecondary planning.
We suggest that you complete three lessons per week before moving on to the next week. If you choose to begin the next week early, that is fine! The key piece is to make sure that you implement the lessons sequentially—lessons are based on the content that came before them in prior lessons.
If you have less time per week: we recommend that you carefully consider which lessons can be combined or which lessons can be dropped so that you still complete a monthly topic that feels coherent for students (rather than completing a portion of a month and then moving on to the next month). While we think students will benefit most from experiencing all 12 lessons per month, we will learn from you on how you adapt if you have less time! Please share your good thinking with us.
We are in the process of drafting a full yearly 9-month scope and sequence that outlines the monthly topics, but it is not yet ready to share. The remaining months will also be influenced by the feedback we receive during the pilot.
We've created a private Slack channel to help you connect with other pilot participants. This is a space for you to share best practices and ask questions with other high school Crew leaders and school leaders.
You should have received an invitation to Slack via email, but if you did not and/or you have another Crew leader or staff member you'd like to add, please email Dimity at dpalmer-smith@eleducation.org to have them added.
We know it can be challenging to juggle everything. We just ask that you try to use as much of the content as you can so that we can learn from your experience.
If you are unable to get to all the lessons, we recommend testing lessons from each month on a shorter timeframe so that you can sample and provide feedback on lessons from both Month 1 and Month 2. We are especially eager for feedback on Month 2 postsecondary planning content, so please utilize as many lessons in Month 2 as possible!
Any school leader and Crew leader listed on the initial interest form or Crew leader form will receive a digital copy via email in August. If you or a staff member who is participating in the pilot needs a copy and has not received it, please email Dimity at dpalmer-smith@eleducation.org.
If you have a question that is not listed below, please reach out for support.
