9th grade Science

Slow is smooth and smooth is fast

Words are powerful and can do great good . . . or harm. Choose them wisely and not in hast or anger. There are many sayings and quotes. One that I can think of says, " Be slow to anger and quick to forgive." I'd like you to find one quote that has meaning for you that you'd consider sharing with me or/and the class that resonates in your life. Someone may say . . . isn't this science class? My reply is that we exist in the larger community of school which encompasses academic, social and emotional learning opportunities. We will focus on the science parts and drip in life learnings/lessons in open spaces.

I'm excited and grateful to get one more semester with students in a classroom!

Key class words: kindness, self-drive & engagement

Wednesday 8-14-19 Wildcat day - classes 1-8 I'm a true rookie with this program and hope to improve as the semester progresses. Please be forgiving of mistakes that inevitable in this living document.

Today: We had open seating and started off with the saying, Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Mr. Fellers shared some information about himself. Maybe a story or two was sprinkled into today's class. :-) A science demo of warm & cooler was given. How was it that everyone was fooled on this demo today? Additional saying from today: If it works, it's magic and it does not, it's science. How many times did you get to stand with the, Have you ever game? lol Talked about how we will be using our sketching skills for some assignments.

*There has been a few students that have been choosing NOT to participate / engage themselves in the science classroom. I can encourage you, but have no power to force your cooperation. The major function of school is to provide learning opportunities. Therefore, if your choice is to not be a part of the class, an alternative assignment will be required. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Monday Sept 9th

We will be going over the exams today in class. Some of you did well and a few . . . not so much. I've already been asked by a few students what they could do to improve. Let me suggest asking yourself a few questions: Have you been actively engaged in class? Have you asked any questions in class or sent a seminar pass to come visit with me? Did you keep track of your 2 booklets with all the written notes in them (remember they could have been used on the test). When doing small group work are you participating within your cell or just writing down answers others are putting down. Have you missed class for any reason and if so . . . taken care of business afterwards? Have you worked extra outside of the classroom on any concept(s) you found challenging? Now, evaluate your responses to the above questions and formulate a plan to improve and then maintain the grade you are striving to attain. It's a long way yet to final grade. Time, along with planning is on your side!

Let's get ready for Splat Lab! We will using our LP skills learned the past weeks to help organize the date into meaningful data sets to assess our hypothesis and the outcome in the conclusion.

9-10/11 Tue Red 2,4,6,8 . Wed Black 1,3,5,7

Wow, the whole band and debate thing really threw me off the schedule that I intended. Had to blend everything back in to this week. Talked a lot about scatter plots and the resulting slope values that we let LP calculate.

9-12/13 Thur Red 2,4,6,8 Fri Black 1,3,5,7

Used the Thur & Friday to get our LP graphs on Word, Pages or G-Docs. Hopefully you become comfortable with Delta Y / Delta X. There will be a quiz this coming Monday. What on it?: Interpretation of graphs, slope work and question about the SciMethod.

Monday Sept 16th

This day will bring our 2nd official assessment (test) - see above notes for what will be on the test. Next week will be bring the into focus our 6th week of your freshman year. It's time to sharpen you work efforts if needed and get ready for the 2/3 of the remaining semester.

When done with the exam there will be a measurement learn-sheet to complete.

9-17/18 Tue Red 2,4,6,8 Wed Black 1,3,5,7

At last some may say . . . Let's put many of the concepts that we've been working on together in the form of a splat lab. What do you thing will happen to a drop of water when you drop it from increasing heights? Materials are pretty simple: paper, eye-dropper, meter stick and student partners. You will need to practice getting just one drop out - more difficult than one may think. Commercial labs have an apparatus call pipettes to ensure an exact amount of fluid is drawn up and expelled as needed.

9-19/20 Thur Red 2,4,6,8 Fri Black 1,3,5,7

Got a feeling that we will need this day to get help putting finishing touches on the Splat Lab. If time allows, we should start gather data on the upcoming Wingspan Lab.

Monday Sept 23rd Block 1,3,5,7 . HC week!

This is a bit of an odd day - yes, it really is! (b/c of HC week) . lol

Complete The Splat lab

Tue Sept 24th Block 2,4,6,8

Same as Black Day (odd)

Wed/Thur Sept 25 & 26

Wingspan Lab day

Friday of HC week - This should be fun! :-)

Monday Sept 30 Back to a "normal" Wildcat Day!

We will be finishing our Wingspan Lab on this day. There will several items to add to the graph that we have already started. 3 slopes of 1, 2 & 1/2 , 3 animals and 3 drawings along with your interpretation of the data.

Tue / Wed Oct 1 &2

We will be taking a test (think graphing & interpretation) and then plan for movement labs. The study of motion is called kinematics. Kind of a big word, but can be fun to study. Think about quantification of motion , a.k.a. putting number to things that move.

Thur / Fri Oct 3 & 4

Carry out a simple rolling golfballs lab and graphing the outcome. If the weather is nice, I'd like to see if you could pull off a motion lab outside using students. Friday is the end of the 1st 6 weeks and a grade progress report will be going out to your parent(s).

Monday Oct 7 Modified Wildcat Day

We will continue our Velocity lab golfball lab - delta Y vs delta X cm/sec

Supreme Court comes to EHS in the afternoon.

Tue/Wed 8 & 9 Position Time graph vs Distance -Time

What is acceleration? What is deceleration? Who was Jesse Owens? Learn sheet from sprinters of the past.

Thur / Friday 10 & 11

Plan for your outside kinematics experiment

Monday & Tue Oct 14-15th 1,3,5,7, then Tue 2,4,6,8

We will be taking notes over s,v,a, magic triangle, g, Force & Vectors and Scalars . Back half of class will spent on making a delta V graph of Jesse Owen learn-sheet.

Wed / Thur 17-18th Sub day schedule

S, V, a learn-sheet No school Friday - thanks to me . ;-)

Tue Oct 29th Pre ACT testing for 9th graders

Wed Oct 30th . Continuation of movie

Thur Oct 31st / Fri Nov 1st Design your own experiment

It's November and the end of the 2nd 6weeks. I don't think anyone is really going to this place to see what's going on in class so I'm going to not write much into the future unless someone tells me that this was a useful helper to them. Please keep sending me emails asking your questions and for any clarification needed.

It is both an honor and privilege to again work directly with students and parents from the 490 school district. I so excited for everyone to get to meet the 2nd semester teacher, Ms Mahoney! I have been an acquaintance of her for sometime now. She comes from a family background of math and science. EHS could not ask for a better young teacher to welcome into our community.
