Welcome to EMS and sixth grade language arts! I’m looking forward to working with your child. Listed below is some general information that will help your child have a successful year. Please take time to read through this document together and ask your child questions about his/her first days at EMS. Upon reading the syllabus I ask that you sign and have your child return it back to me. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by phone or email. E-mail works really well as it is easier to check throughout the day. Together, we’ll make this a great year!

Content Information:

The Kansas English Language Arts College and Career Readiness Standards focus on reading a variety of text to comprehend meaning, summarize, make inferences, analyze text structures, determine word meanings, identify main ideas, details and themes, and cite specific textual evidence to support conclusions. In order to reach these broad goals, students will be expected to read both inside and outside the classroom. Students will continue to expand their writing, speaking, and listening skills through the creation of arguments, expositions, and narratives.

Delivery of Content:

A variety of educational resources and techniques will be used in an effort to reach a diversified group of learners. Instructional techniques may include reading various text, class discussions, interactive notebooks, graphic organizers, writing activities, videos, Internet resources, iPads, research projects, hands-on, cooperative, cross-curricular and novel studies. Students will be expected to read independently outside of the classroom. They will be expected to participate in class discussions and projects based on their independent book.

Course Expectations:

  • Students will come to class on time, with needed materials and completed assignments.
  • Students will listen to the teacher, follow directions promptly, and accept responsibility for his/her behavior.
  • Students will use appropriate voice and language.
  • Students will respect community and individuals’ property.
  • Students will remain on task and allow others to remain on task.
  • Students will display courtesy and tact and interact with classmates appropriately.
  • Students will behave in a manner that does not interfere with my teaching or anyone’s learning.
  • In short, be a PRO:

Prepared (Come to class with needed materials and ready to work.)

Respectful (Treat others the way you want to be treated.)

On time (Be on time.)

Safe (Do not do anything that may hurt anyone else or yourself.)

Discipline/Consequences:

  • The El Dorado Middle School Discipline Policy will be enforced.

Classroom Materials:

Binder, pencils, notebook paper, Interactive Notebook, iPad and library book are required each day for class. It will be the responsibility of the student/parent to provide an additional notebook, if it is lost or damaged. Any donations of colored pencils, Super-Fine Sharpies, pencils, notebook paper, bottles of Elmer’s School Glue, or tissues are gladly welcomed.

Homework Policy:

Homework is typically due the following day. Late work will result in a deduction of points as determined by the teacher. Students who do not complete assignments on time will be asked to do so during After School Homework Center. Parents and students should monitor grades using the on-line PowerSchool site. Please contact the school office for your child’s password.
