COUNSELOR’S CORNER

Student success is based on building the habit of Good Attendance with a regular routine where parents and students model positive work habits. Parents are encouraged to continue reading with their children and helping them maintain a regular attendance record. Showing up on time every day is important to a child’s success from the beginning of their educational years and throughout their schooling. Missing school makes it harder to develop early reading skills and sets poor attendance patterns that are hard to break. Being absent is a difficult recovery for all students. Students are more likely to be successful in academics when they attend school consistently. This includes being at school on time or better yet - about 15 minutes before the bell rings. It remains a very difficult task for the teacher and the class to build skills and make adequate progress if students are frequently tardy or absent. Students need to feel a part of the group and, when they arrive late, they are rushed and have no time to transition for their upcoming day. If you, as parents or guardians, have questions or problems with your child’s attendance or developing a regular schedule - please call the counselor for a teamed discussion to brainstorm ways to make attendance a regular event. There is no doubt that we miss your child, and every other student, if they are not at school. As parents, you can make the most of your child’s education by getting them to school every day and on time.

Educationally yours,
