Jefferson Elementary has been involved in "House" assemblies for the last two years. We are looking for ways to improve our time with staff and students. Today I visited Logan Elementary School in Emporia. Logan Elementary begins their week with a whole school assembly. They start their assembly with a school song and a calming activity. Today's activity was a breathing drain. This is letting your breath out slowly several times. Then they greeted each other with either a hand shake or hand hug. Students were able to share celebrations. Those celebrations were what ever students wanted to share. Afterward, a 5th grade class did a skit about responsibilities. The assembly only happens on Monday. The other days of the week the principal goes over each of these things on the intercom.

As soon as the whole school time each classroom holds family meetings. This is where students can share anything they want.

Once per month the school is separated into small groups. Each staff member is in charge of a small group of students, (at least one student per grade level). They do "family" activities. Birthday celebrations, cooking, reading favorite stories, etc.

I was thankful that I was able to visit Logan Elementary and am looking forward to changes we are talking about for our new school year.
