In our district, counseling is available for students on three levels.
Individual counseling is available through student requests, teacher referrals, and/or parent recommendations. These sessions could address topics such as academic concerns, behavior management, peer issues, family changes, mental health concerns, etc. These sessions may also include student suicide risk assessments.
There are small groups that address special issues at each grade level. Students attend these groups by the same referral method. Parents will be contacted for permission before small groups begin.
The third level involves the counselor presenting classroom guidance lessons appropriate to the students’ ages and needs. Some topics addressed during guidance lessons include career counseling, conflict resolution, family changes, behavior management, grief and loss, self-esteem, study skills, peer relations, life skills issues, diversity and differences, on-task behavior, and organizational skills.
