Hello! I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Laura Merritt. I grew up in rural Oklahoma and currently call Oklahoma City, my home. As a third-generation entrepreneur, my roots run deep in the world of business.
When I'm not working, I enjoy being a fiber artist. Through knitting and crocheting, I find solace in the rhythmic counting of stitches to create something beautiful out of a tangled mess. Yarn is purely for fun though, I need some hobbies I'm not trying to monetize. I have 2 dogs, a cat, and a husband, who is a chef. Although, I prefer to call him an artist with food. I invite you to explore his culinary masterpieces on his Instagram page and draw your own conclusions.
After almost 10 years in banking, I started Eldium LLC to help small business owners lay a firm foundation for the success of their business(es). When I was a banker, I saw many small business owners passionate about their industry but unfamiliar with the documentation they needed or best practices for recordkeeping. Bookkeeping is just a niche part of document management.
In the beginning of my banking career, I took a hiatus for a couple of years to work as a Victim/Witness Coordinator for an Oklahoma District Attorney. It was there I expanded on my document management skills and started developing an enjoyment of legal research. Laws are the user manual of this country. In my opinion, the US law books are a mess and could use some document management as well.
I believe we each have our own strengths, and we started our businesses to do things we enjoy. Nothing makes me happier than seeing people excited and inspired about what they're doing. By working with me, you'll be freeing up resources to focus on growing your business and reaching your goals both professionally and personally.
For a non-numbers person to have to stare at and organize columns of numbers, it can be the most soul-crushing thing to do. I admit, there are parts of my business that would be better off without me doing the work. *Cough* Marketing & Sales *Cough* The finances of your business should not be one of those areas you ignore or neglect.
However as an Executive, you really don't need to be bogged down with the minute details, you need more broad picture numbers. That's where a bookkeeper comes in handy. I enjoy taking raw data and then going through the process of getting it where it needs to go to be the most useful. "Trust but verify" is a saying you'll hear from me often. Honestly, I'm only doing the categorizing to get to the pretty reports. I'm more than happy to answer any questions about reports I'm asked to generate and pull. Growing up, I always heard it's not polite to brag about yourself, but I really do like showing off what I know and being challenged to find more answers. So please ask me questions.
If you were to be asked for any document in your business, would you be able to quickly find it, or would you have to hunt for it? Perhaps you're not sure if you even have the document you're being asked for?
Document management is the process of creating and implementing a digital (or paper) filing system. Document management answers the questions:
What do I name this?
Where do I save this?
How can I quickly locate this file again?
I prefer digital filing systems but there are some things that just need to be kept as paper. I can help you develop processes for keeping both systems organized.

Small business owners make up middle-class America, yet most small businesses close after 3-5 years. Owners have to take on the responsibilities of so many positions within their company until they delegate those tasks to others. Having disorganized documents or *shudders* no documents at all, makes it so much harder to pass on your knowledge and work yourself out of a job.
That's truly the goal for me. If I had a magic wand, my vision would be:
I don't want people to have to work forever. I want us to leverage technology to enable families to take vacations and enjoy spending time with each other. That can't happen if we're stressed about temporarily shutting down the business and spending money while not earning money. Or we're exhausted and can't spare additional energy to train people. Someday I'd like to retire, and I'd like you to retire as well. Let us live the American Dream! Sell or close your business only if you want to, not because you have to.
