While formatting your papers, including research, and writing your paper in general, you might come across some internet resources that describe MLA 9th edition of their Handbook instead of the 8th edition this lesson has been teaching you. That is okay.
The Modern Language Association comes out with updated versions of their Handbook every few years with no exception during spring 2021; MLA 8 was published 5-years prior. I will work on updating this lesson to incorporate MLA 9's updates.
Overall, whether you follow MLA 8th or MLA 9th edition with your assignments in our course, you will be fine.
I remember a lot of formatting and style changes from the 7th to the 8th editions of the MLA Handbook. This time, though, there were not many changes from MLA 8 to MLA 9.
The changes were primarily additions for clarity. For instance, the MLA 8 manual only had 24 visuals and 160 pages. The MLA 9 manual has 142 visuals and 400 pages. Those extra visuals and pages are mostly to help answer questions a lot of people had about the 8th edition.
There some changes with wording criteria, though. These are to help make our text more inclusive. For instance, using gender-neutral terms when gender is not necessary to the writing.
Review the following for more details about the changes from MLA 8 to MLA 9:

You'll notice from the guide above that there aren't many changes from the 8th to the 9th edition, just updates for clarity. Therefore, if you use what you have learned in this overall lesson, you will be fine.
