It started with a vision to transform a simple, abundant natural resource into a powerful symbol of marine conservation. In 2025, a new opportunity was brought to the village of Arborek. Petrus Maure, a renowned Alornese crafter, was invited to lead a specialized workshop in coconut crafts. His goal was to pass on his intricate skills and open a new door for the community.
This project is about much more than creating beautiful objects. It is a dual mission. For the crafters, it opens up a sustainable livelihood. For the ocean, it serves as a voice for the Kalabia—the Raja Ampat Epaulette Shark. Every product raises critical awareness for this unique species and the waters it calls home.
Kalabia is how several communities in Raja Ampat call the Raja Ampat Epaulette Shark (Hemiscyllium freycineti). It is an endemic shark species, meaning they can only be found in Raja Ampat area. The species is known for its unique ability to 'walk' — swimming with their pectoral fins on the sea bed along the reef and sand
Elasmobranch Project Indonesia (EPI) is a local NGO focusing on the research and conservation of elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) in Indonesia. Since 2023, EPI started the Kalabia Project. A program focusing to improve the conservation efforts for the Kalabia in Arborek and Yenbuba Village of Raja Ampat
From species biology and ecology research, the Kalabia Project also focuses in developing capacity of the local community in various aspects to support both sustainable livelihood and ocean conservation
This program is in collaboration with Arborek Dive Shop and BLUD Raja Ampat
The Kalabia Project is supported by Rumah Group, Save Our Seas Foundation, New England Aquarium Marine Conservation Action Fund, The Rufford Foundation, and Konservasi Indonesia
