This video shows examples of magnets and how they work.  

In this video, the man is laying a piece of paper over top of different kinds of magnets.  Next, he shakes iron filings, which are little shavings of iron, onto the paper.  The filings are attracted to the magnet, and allow the magnetic field to be seen.
