Daily Behavior
First grade will mirror the building's PBIS behavior expectations identified as “BARKS”. The positive attributes of these five expectations will be promoted in the classroom and schoolwide.
*Behavior *Attitude *Respect *Kindness *Safety
Our goal in the classroom is to have a fun and positive learning environment. We want to identify inappropriate behaviors when they happen, provide feedback, and give the students the opportunity to make better choices. We plan to do this in first grade by using a three strikes, you’re out strategy. All students are given the same opportunities to make the right choices, in the event their choices are not appropriate or their actions are not within the school rules, then they will receive a “strike”. These strikes are simple and given on their name tag where they can visually see them. As they correct the behavior or action then the strike is erased from their name tag, if the behavior/action continues another strike will be given. If they end their day with 3 or more strikes then they will conference with the teacher at the end of the day & receive a ”Think Sheet” in their folder. The “Think Sheet” is completed with the student and teacher and then will be sent home for parents to look over, sign and send back. If a student gets multiple ‘Think Sheets’ this could result in an office referral. This part of the process is teacher discretion. There can be exceptions to the rule, for example, physical violence would be an automatic office visit, as that is an escalation of behavior we take seriously. Class Dojo will be used to help communicate any major issues or concerns as well, so feel free to reach out through it when you need to.
Everyday the students come into the classroom with a fresh start to have a great day. If the students have a great day, this will be communicated on the back of their take home folders with a smiley face on that date. The students will be able to color their smiley face however they like. This also means even if they get one or two warnings/strikes in the day, then the smiley will still be colored in because they did not strike out, they were able to correct their behavior and no further home communication was needed. Now, if the smiley face is not colored in, then you're going to see a “Think Sheet” coming home in their folder to review. Students will also be rewarded for positive behavior with my classroom in one of many ways; Treasure Chest, Bulldog Bucks for the school store, or class party points! We try our best to really reward all the good things as that is what we want kids to remember most about themselves at the end of each day! We also do MARVELOUS MONDAY in First Grade where students earn extra recess for their hard work and good behavior.
** Teachers will be grading papers following this system.
