Racial Justice Essay Contest

The Equal Justice Initiative in partnership with the Alexandria Community Remembrance Project is pleased to announce a scholarship contest open to 9th – 12th grade students attending public high school in Alexandria, VA where prizes totaling at least $5,000 will be awarded to winning participants.

Students are asked to examine the history of a topic of racial injustice and to discuss its legacy today. Essays should explain the chosen topic using a specific historical event(s), explore how the injustice persists, and imagine solutions for a future free from racial injustice. Students are encouraged to reflect on how the topic impacts their own lives and communities.

This Essay Contest Officially Opens on January 16, 2023.

STUDENT ESSAY SERVICES


Students can find 24-hour writing support through Tutor.Com. To access, go to your Canvas account and click on the link for Tutor.Com: 24/7 Online Tutoring.

The Alexandria City High School College and Career Center is open from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily. Students are encouraged to stop by before or after school or during lunch.


The Alexandria City High School Writing Center will be open to assist students during the essay contest. Students can request an appointment with the writing center.


The Alexandria Department of Recreation is offering help daily while the contest is open through their teen program. Computers and additional help are available to access essay information and to send in your entry at the rec centers. For more information contact: acrp@alexandriava.gov.


Pizza and Proof Parties will be held at a couple of Alexandria City libraries for students preparing essays for the EJI contest. For essay assistance, please visit the library website to find a pizza and proof party near you.


The ACHS Minnie Howard Library will also host a pizza and proofing party after school on February 8.
