SELECTIVITY

SELECTIVIDAD

All national Baccalaureate students who want to enter university in Spain have to pass the 'Selectividad'. The 'Selectividad' is a set of exams that each student takes once they have passed the Baccalaureate. It is essential that any student wishing to access university or an official degree successfully passes the Selectividad.

The Selectividad consists of two parts: the General Phase and the Specific Phase. A student is considered eligible to apply to a university if the average mark of the subjects examined in the General Phase is equal to or higher than 4 out of 10 and this average, weighted with their Baccalaureate mark*, is higher than 5. The weighting is: General Phase (40%) and Baccalaureate mark (60%)

In addition to the General Phase, in the Selectividad every student can sit the Specific Phase. This is the phase in which each student, according to their objectives, sits up to a maximum of three exams. They then choose the 2 most favourable marks which are multiplied by a weighting coefficient**, and then added to the mark they have already obtained from the combined General Phase and Baccalaureate. The Specific Phase, therefore, will end up increasing the student's access mark, so that it can reach a maximum of 14.

GENERAL PHASE

  • Spanish Language

  • Catalan Language

  • English Language

  • History

1 subject option from:

  • Mathematics

  • Applied Mathematics

  • Latin

  • History & fundaments of Art

SPECIFIC PHASE

  • Is voluntary

  • Serves to get up to 4 extra points.

  • The student sits up to 3 exams, and chooses the 2 most favourable marks.

*The Baccalaureate mark is calculated from the average mark gained from all subjects studied during the 2-year period as calaculated by the school.

**To find out the weighting coefficient by which the mark each exam of the Specific Phase must be multiplied, please consult the weighting table for the current year (link). Of the 3 exams that the student can take in the Specific Phase, the final sum will always be taken from the two that are most favourable to them according to the degree to which they are applying.
