Welcome to Music

Music Class and Covid-19

I have left the information below which was written pre-covid to highlight what our program is usually like. During Covid-19, music class has evolved and adapted to the ever-changing situation.

Last year music class travelled on a cart from room to room. Starting after spring break, music class was almost entirely based on creative dance and happened outside as much as possible.

So far, during the 2021-2022 school year music class has happened more closely to normal in the music room. Some changes are still made. For example, students are not allowed to share items so the use of instruments is limited a great deal. Grade 5 and 6 students have rotating units so that one class at time for a three week period can play the handbells and ukuleles.

About Music at MHV

Students in grade K to 6 participate in music at Mills Haven. The music program at Mills Haven is heavily influenced by the Orff-Schulwerk approach to music. The Orff approach relies heavily on creativity and direct student involvement in playing, singing, and dancing. In addition, the Orff approach and music education at MHV weaves drama, movement and many fine arts experiences into class.

Why Music?

"Time and time again, music education has been shown to affect brain development, social and emotional capacities, and countless other skills and abilities. Music brings people together and gives them a sense of belonging."

Pitched Percussion

The pitched percussion instruments come to us from the Orff approach. They include xylophones (wooden bars,) metallaphones (large meta bars,) and glockenspiels (small metal bars.)

Ukulele

The ukulele has been taught in schools since the 1970's starting in Nova Scotia under the leadership of Chalmers Doane. James Hill is the latest master to hold the torch for ukulele instruction in Canada.

Handbells

Handbells have been used in the classroom for many years. They are used in grade five and six and provide a wonderful opportunity for students to play together in a context that fosters teamwork and cooperation.
