Wound Blocker

A device which will apply pressure to any deep wound and gashes, saving the person before they bleed out

Why a Wound Blocker? (Problem)

More than 200 Americans are shot and wounded daily, and 100 are killed because of guns. Since shootings are a regular problem that occur every day, we have decided to create a solution which will hopefully solve this problem. Although our main idea is for this product to be used for gunshot wounds, it can also be used for any deep cuts or gashes.

The Solution

Our design will provide pressure to the wound in order to stop the bleeding. It is meant for people with serious gashes, gunshot wounds, or anything that causes excess bleeding that needs direct pressure. Our product will apply the correct amount of pressure right away so that we can help the person stay alive and not lose an excess amount of blood. Our product will have an emergency contact to the hospital, but meanwhile they are arriving our product will keep them alive.

Background Research

People get shot daily and suffer from blood loss or obtain a deep wound which causes them to lose a lot of blood. On many occasions, the ambulances are not able to arrive in time to stop the bleeding. Due to this, the patients die or lose too much blood they are not able to be saved. Our idea is to create a design which will stop this from happening, and hopefully save the lives of many individuals.

Target Market

Our target market is mainly anybody, but we would attempt to sell to major car companies. It would be ideal if there was one in every car, so in many different situations, the wound blocker can be used and hopefully save a life. For example, if there was an accident and one person was stable, they can get the wound blocker and apply pressure to the major wound. Also, if a person is shot in the middle of the road, a car can stop and assist them.

Design Solution

It is a large vinyl band that will be adjustable because it has velcro. It will have a pump to apply pressure to the wounded area. It will also have a touchscreen display to show the persons vital and an option to call an ambulance and ask for help. This product will be available to many that way if anything happens to anyone around you you are able to help. We recommend that you keep our product in your car that way it is available at the person’s convenience

Competitors / Existing Products

There are similar products to what we created although none have the same purpose.

Samuel Siegfried Karl Ritter von Basch invented the blood pressure monitor. A blood pressure cuff is used to take blood pressure. A small, handheld air pump inflates the blood pressure cuff. After the cuff has been inflated an air valve is used to slowly release air pressure. As the pressure is released, a stethoscope is used to listen to arterial blood flow sounds.

Elastic bandage wraps are also similar to the Wound blocker as they are used to even stable pressure which can restrict swelling at the place of injury. Again, these bandages have relatable purposes but are very different. There are many different inventions and product that measure blood pressure, call 911, or even administer pressure to a wound; but none have the ability to do all three like the Wound Blocker.

Testing

During the design process we tried multiple materials before commiting to vinyl. We also had many trial and errors when it came to coding the LCD screen. Although we have not had an opportunity to test it on a real patient we are positive the Wound Blocker will save many lives.

Reflections

This would help many people to survive harsh injurys. This would be benifical to many people, even though our code it not working yet we are sure that this product will change many peoples lives.

Future Work / Improvements

We need to fix the code because it was not working with the materials that we had at home. We didn't have the right materials to build our product correctly. In the future, we hope to improve everything and create a real product which can save many lives. We also hope to add more features to the LCD screen other than the persons heart rate.
