The National Geographic Classroom Resource Library has a searchable collection of dynamic encyclopedic entries that include vocabulary, pictures, and videos for students. You can share these directly to your Google Classroom!
Examples include the Great Garbage Patch, (Grades 4+) Mapping the Classroom, (grades K-1) and Create a Weather Map (grades K-6)
CultureGrams is one of my favorite databases. It offers a ton of up-to-date information on countries around the world, the United States, and includes a Kids' Edition, which offers good information at a lower lexile level.
offers a PDF of great lesson plans and activities. Simply go to the home page, scroll down, and click on "Teaching Activities." Take some time to peruse the pdf before you print it, though; it's 213 pages.
National Geographic for kids is a great website! There are videos, games, online books, and learning resources galore. They have informative articles and videos for that unit on Animals. Kids can choose from wild cats to Prehistoric dinosaurs and research their favorite animal with ease. The Books link offers worksheets and interactive online books like Yoga Animals by Tara Stiles."
SIRS Discoverer is an amazing, robust research database for K-12 kiddos. There are newspaper articles, website links, and refereed journal articles for students . DIRS Discoverer covers Famous People; Countries, States, and Provinces; Controversial Issues; and Animals. Students can search simply by browsing the options on the landing page and teachers can search for articles that fit Curricular standards. There are training webinars and an interactive Libguide to help you familiarize yourself with the database.
The Nature Conservancy offers some great interactive field trips for students. Students can learn about coral reefs, jungles, alternative energy, ecosystems and school gardens when they explore this website. You can embed these videos in your virtual classroom.
The Teaching and Learning Unit at the National Museum of African American History and Culture creates programs and resources for students in grades 3-12 (ages 8-18) designed to encourage multiple perspective-taking and build critical thinking skills. Our initiatives encourage students to explore, question, and create history in order to develop self-pride and inspire life-long learning.
Women's contributions and accomplishments have largely been overlooked and consequently omitted from mainstream culture. The National Women's History Museum helps fill that void. To this end, the Museum serves to place women's history within current historical narratives because inclusive history is good history.
Putting the Art in Science!
Want to see your students' art come to life? Try the QuiverVision app. You can print out selected coloring pages for free, have the kiddos color, draw, decorate, and then, using the app on your phone or tablet, watch them come to life in their wonderful 3-D glory! There are flags, Cell diagrams, California State Parks, and Landmark packets, just to name a few.
Giving your student smore voice and choice in the classroom!
Destiny offers a Collections option that allows teachers and librarians to curate selected resources for student projects and place those collections on the Destiny Discover home page. You can provide web pages, database articles, and titles of books in the library for a unit and link that collection to your Google classroom. Find out more at the Follett Collections Help Center web page.
Google Slides - Use SlidesCarnival for more themes.
Prezi is a fun tool for older students. The presentations zoom in, flip, and slide. They offer videos and the support for this platform is fantastic. We had our students create "Prezi-Rezis" for their resumes one year. I still have mine!
Animoto is a great way for students to create slideshows with music. It works well for book trailers and presentations that used to be posters.
Voicethread is another great tool for book trailers and presentations. Students can record their voices for narration over pictures and for comments to others on their work.
Blabberize is so much fun! Imagine having your student reading a report on a president out loud with his face doing the talking. Add a QR code and you have some serious STEAM in the classroom.
Powtoon is a tool for creating animated presentations. It's great for group projects too!
Thinglink is still free for educators. Students and teachers can make any image interactive by adding video, sound, and links.
