Per the California Department of Education (CDE)
The California Healthy Youth Act (EC 51930-51939) requires that students in grades 7-12 receive comprehensive sexual health education and HIV prevention education at least once in middle school and once in high school. The Education Code defines comprehensive sexual health education as “education regarding human development and sexuality, including education on pregnancy, contraception, and sexually transmitted infections” (EC 51931(b)) and HIV prevention education as “instruction on the nature of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and AIDS, methods of transmission, strategies to reduce the risk of HIV infection, and social and public health issues related to HIV and AIDS” (EC 51931(d)).
Learning Targets:
Students will describe human sexuality.
Students will explain their sexual and reproductive healthcare rights.

Students will use medical terminology to correctly identify the structures and functions of the male and female reproductive systems.
Students will describe the changes that occur during puberty and aging.
Students will describe how to care for the male and female reproductive systems.
Learning Targets:
Students will describe the various FDA-approved birth control methods, their typical failure rates, and type of protection they provide, including abstinence.
Students will learn effective verbal and nonverbal communication skills to prevent sexual involvement, HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.

Students will describe how conception occurs, the stages of pregnancy and fetal development, childbirth, and the responsibilities of parenting.
Students will describe the importance of prenatal care, including nutritional needs, avoiding alcohol and drugs, and regular check ups.
Students will describe the legal choices available to a person once a pregnancy occurs.

Students will describe how various STIs are transmitted, signs and symptoms, and how to reduce transmission.
Students will analyze STD rates among teens.

Students will describe how HIV/AIDS is transmitted, how to reduce the risk of becoming infected, how to obtain testing, and treatment.
Students will describe the impacts having HIV has on a person’s life

Students will accurately define affirmative consent and apply knowledge to different scenarios.

Students will know how to support a friend who is being sexually assaulted or abused.

Students will know the signs of someone is being trafficked and how to seek help
Students will identify different types of abuse and how to prevent or overcome its effects
