EGUSD Board Resolutions
Sikh American Awareness and Appreciation Month
Elk Grove Unified recognizes the month of November as Sikh American Awareness and Appreciation Month. Sikh immigrants have resided in California for more than a century with the first Sikh immigrants having labored on railroad construction projects, in lumber mills, and in the agricultural heartlands of the Sacramento, San Joaquin, and Imperial Valleys. Sikh Americans have distinguished themselves in numerous areas of endeavor; they have demonstrated particular success in the areas of agriculture, trucking, medicine, and in the creation of small, family-owned businesses. Sikh Americans have served as members of Congress, mayors, judges, city council members, soldiers, and scientists, and the Sikh and Punjabi American communities of California continue to make important contributions to our state and nation.
In support of this resolution, the EGUSD Curriculum and Professional Learning Department will provide resources to teachers regarding civic engagement and the Sikh community. Additionally, the Educational Equity Department will post an informational slide deck on the department website for district personnel.
Native American Heritage Month
Elk Grove Unified recognizes the month of November as Native American Heritage Month. The month of November is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. Native American Heritage Month is also an opportune time to raise general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present.
Throughout the year, the contributions of Native Americans are presented in the regular curriculum; however, this special focus for one month serves as a reminder of the combined contributions of Native Americans. During the month of November, school-based administration and staff are encouraged to thoughtfully plan culturally-sensitive, school-wide activities and lessons for students that further support and explore the history and cultures of Native Americans. This time can be used to celebrate the considerable role the Indigenous people of the United States played in the establishment and growth of the nation. Schools should consider engaging with their local tribal communities to connect students with current Native American contributions and cultural heritage. It is important to honor the ongoing contributions and achievements, as well as the cultural and historical legacy of the Native Americans.
In support of this resolution, the Curriculum and Professional Learning department will provide resources to teachers linking the Native American Heritage month to the arts, Connecting the Past to the Present: California Indigenous Art. Additionally, the Educational Equity Department will post an informational slide deck on the department website for district personnel.
Mobile Communcation Device Reminder
In May 2023, our EGUSD Board of Education approved a revised policy 5131.8 regarding Mobile Communication Devices (MCDs). An administrative regulation to accompany the policy revision was also adopted. The policy and regulation define “mobile communication devices” as “any portable electronic device capable of transmitting or receiving data in the form of a voice or text message or capable of accessing the internet. Some examples include cell phones, smartphones, smart watches, earbuds, and other such devices. Students in grades TK-6 may not use MCDs while on campus except when a teacher or administrator grants permission to the student. When on campus, MCDs must be turned off and placed out of sight during the school day. Students in grades TK-6 who need to call parents may use phones located in the school administrative office. Additionally, all students in grades TK-12 must comply anytime a request is made by school personnel to cease the use of MCDs on campus, even before or after school. If an MCD is observed by staff during school hours or activities when the use of the device is not authorized, or after a student has been directed by school personnel to cease use of the device, it shall be confiscated until picked up by a parent or guardian.
However, a student shall not be prohibited from possessing or using a MCD under any of the following circumstances:
· In the case of an emergency or in response to a perceived threat of danger.
· When a teacher or administrator grants permission to the student to possess or use an MCD, subject to any reasonable limitation imposed by that teacher or administrator.
· When a licensed physician determines that the possession or use of MCD is use of which is limited in purposes, related to and necessary for the student’s health and well being as required in the student’s health plan.
· When the possession or use is required by the students IEP or 504 plan.
This revised board policy is also in our Carroll Family/Student Handboolk. Please contact Jack Ferreira, Principal with questions.

This includes the capacity to communicate clearly, listen actively, cooperate, work collaboratively, navigate settings with differing social and cultural demands and opportunities, provide leadership, and seek or offer help when needed.
Social awareness: the ability to understand the perspectives of and empathize with others, including those from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and contexts. This includes the capacity to feel compassion for others, understand broader historical and social norms for behavior in different settings, and recognize family, school, and community resources and supports.
