The Visual & Performing Arts Department of the East Greenwich Public Schools serves as a vibrant hub for creativity, artistic exploration, and self-expression. Our mission is to cultivate the artistic talents of every student, providing them with the skills, knowledge, and experiences necessary to thrive as creators, performers, and cultural contributors.
The arts are at the heart of human expression, allowing students to develop essential life skills such as creative problem-solving, collaboration, critical thinking, and self-confidence. Through a diverse range of visual and performing arts courses, students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in artistic disciplines, refine their craft, and discover their creative voices.
The arts are more than just subjects to study—they are essential for personal growth, academic success, and professional preparation. Engaging in visual and performing arts helps students:
Think Creatively – Encouraging imagination, innovation, and original thinking.
Develop Emotional Intelligence – Providing a meaningful way to express and process emotions.
Strengthen Communication Skills – Teaching how to convey ideas through visual imagery, music, and performance.
Enhance Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking – Encouraging artistic decision-making and analytical reasoning.
Cultivate Collaboration & Leadership – Teaching teamwork, discipline, and accountability through ensemble and group projects.
Prepare for Future Careers – Offering pathways to college programs, creative industries, and professional opportunities in the arts.
Students explore traditional and contemporary art techniques, working with drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, digital media, photography, and design. From foundational courses to AP-level portfolio development, our curriculum provides a comprehensive pathway for students interested in artistic expression, career preparation, and creative exploration.
Our instrumental and vocal music programs offer students the opportunity to perform, compose, and develop technical mastery. Through the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Orchestra, Chorus, Music Theory, and Digital Music Production, students cultivate a deeper understanding of musicianship, collaboration, and artistic excellence.
The theater program offers students real-world experience in acting, stagecraft, musical theater, and ensemble performance. Through school productions, cabaret performances, and short plays, students build confidence and develop the skills necessary for both on-stage and behind-the-scenes roles.
Our Visual & Performing Arts Department is led by a dedicated team of educators who are passionate about fostering creativity, self-expression, and artistic excellence. Each teacher brings unique expertise and experience, providing students with enriching opportunities to explore music, theater, and visual arts.
