Beginning Weight Training

*COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is geared for the student who has very little experience lifting weights and wants to learn more.. Students will learn safety, spotting techniques, core muscle groups and strength and endurance lifting philosophies. Students will be introduced toTeambuildr weight training program and follow it daily. . Students will be required to pass a pre-lift worksheet, before they are eligible to lift. Students are required to do periodic max outs in order to assess their progress and adjust their workout loads appropriately throughout the course.
*REQUIRED MATERIALS:
1. Tennis shoes
2. Shorts and / or sweat pants
3. T-shirt and / or sweat shirt - No cut off shirts or shorts, no hats indoors or clothing deemed inappropriate for physical education class. Hats outside only.
4. Towel & personal shower items (lockers and locks are provided)
Beginning Weight Training Essential Learning Outcomes:
Students can improve their personal fitness levels of cardiovascular fitness, core strength, and upper body strength.
Students will explain and demonstrate the following core fitness principles: overload, specificity, muscular endurance, muscular strength, cardiovascular endurance.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the components of personal wellness; physical fitness, health, and nutrition.
Students can exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others.
Students can design and implement a personal strength training plan.
Students can demonstrate an understanding of safety precautions while using fitness equipment.
The high school is adopting the standardized grading scale as follows:
100% - 94% = A (approximate point distribution)
93% - 90% = A- Participation = 60%
89% - 87% = B+ Skill development = 20%
86% - 83% = B Written work = 20%
82% - 80% = B-
79% - 77% = C+
76% - 73% = C
59% - below= F
Students receive 5 daily participation points for meeting weight training expectations including proper warm up and completing assigned TEAM BUILDR Workouts posted daily. Students are expected to dress each day, give full effort in all activities, demonstrate good cooperation and teamwork, attend all classes, and arrive to class on time in order to retain all 5 points each day.
Note: Since this is a participation driven class, attendance is critical. If you are missing an excessive amount of class for any reason, you may need to come in and make up some time. This will be arranged between student and teacher.

REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS:
Proper dress each day, daily participation in all activities, written work and strength and endurance development.
Game Day Policy:
Because many of you may be involved in a sport, we have implemented a policy for lifting on days of the “competition”. You will not be excused from lifting the day of the competition. You may alter program so as to meet daily requirements by lifting lighter weight for higher repetitions or doing four or more alternate lifts/ exercises. Students who do not lift the day of a game or day after a game without a signed medical excuse will receive a zero for that day.
Tardy Guidelines
Students are expected to get to class on time each hour. Students will be allowed 1 free pass during the semester for being unexcused tardy. After that, each time a student is late to class, they will be marked as unexcused tardy, receive a disciplinary referral from the teacher, and receive detention in the office.
If a student is more than 10 minutes late, they will get an unexcused absence for that hour, receive a disciplinary referral from the teacher and receive detention in the office.
CELL PHONE POLICY: Students should NEVER have a cell phone with them in class unless we are using them for a project. Leave in Backpack or LOCK THEM UP IN YOUR LOCKERS DURING CLASS. Consequences for just having them in a pocket during class. Phones are easily dropped during activity and damaged.
Cellular Device Guidelines
Cellular devices will not be used at any point during the class period. All students will be expected to put their cellular devices on silent in a designated area as determined by the teacher immediately when they enter the classroom. Cellular devices will remain in this designated area the entire class period. Cellular devices seen or heard outside of the designated area will be taken away by the teacher and subject to disciplinary action. Any exceptions to this rule need to be pre approved by the administration.

*Wireless Earbuds
*Students may have a playlist for their earbuds but must keep the phone in the caddy. No touching phone during class.
