Mrs. Matchett Wagner

Most of my students refer to me as Mrs. MW. I am an alumni of East Grand Forks Senior High School class of 2004. I graduated from the University of North Dakota in 2016 and have been an English teacher at East Grand Forks Senior High since. I received my master’s degree in English through Southern New Hampshire University, in 2019.

I am excited to come to the classroom every day. My students should expect to be challenged, to grow as both students and people, and to experience several components of English Language Arts through thoughtful and engaging exercises, projects, and assignments. We blend technology into the classroom and students can expect to utilize Google Classroom on a regular basis.

I teach junior English. Our focus is American Literature. We take a look at various pieces from the major movements in American Literature and parse through them individually, in small groups, and as a whole class. We read short stories, articles, poems, and novels throughout the course. We expand the fundamentals of good writing to include more MLA conventions, appropriate academic language, the construction of an effective and strong essay, and our big paper is a literary analysis. Students also have the opportunity to read novels of their choice throughout the year, which is beneficial to their overall academic achievement and the best method of improving ACT scores.

I also teach the College in the High School classes through the University of Minnesota, Crookston. I teach Composition I in the fall of each year and then alternate American Literature and British Literature in the spring. These courses are rigorous, discussion based courses infused with regular writing. Students can expect to sharpen their critical thinking skills and be confronted with literature that challenges their assumptions.

I look forward to working with students, engaging with parents regarding their student’s success, working with athletes on the field as a girls soccer coach, helping students become leaders through Student Council, and interacting with the community at school and extracurricular events.
