This is PBL, this is what we do.
At the end of every year, the students at Katherine Smith celebrate learning by sharing the work they did throughout the project with their families and to the community.
This year we offer a quick glimpse into the projects completed for Exhibition at each grade level.
Driving Question: How can we retell a story to our family and friends?
Description: Students learn about character traits and settings in a weekly story. They will learn how to retell the story using transition words.
Driving Question: How can we use light or sound to communicate over a distance?
Description: Students will use observations and investigations to understand the following - Sounds are made when something vibrates, sounds can be loud or soft and high or low, we use sound to communicate, a shadow is made when something blocks the light.
Driving Question: Why are human and animal relationships important?
Description: Students will learn about the role of dogs (pets and working dogs) and learn about responsible pet ownership. They will take part in scenarios where they will use critical thinking skills to make an evidence based claim on which family is suitable for the shelter dog. The students will then choose a pet from the shelter and write an opinion piece convincing readers to adopt their pet.
Driving Question: Who am I?
Description: Students explore what countries their family or ancestors came from. They explore their identity and identify their ethnicity. Their languages, cultures, and traditions will be explored. Taking pride in who we are and where we come from is a focus of this project.
Driving Question: How does knowing San Jose's past help me know my place in my city today?
Description: Students learn about the San Jose's different eras, economies, people and their motivations for settling this area, and their contributions to the city. Students research and create a video or narration that connects them to San Jose's history and how it continues to evolve. By connecting to the past, students will see themselves as a valuable part of this diverse city.
Driving Question: Was it worth the risk?
Description: Student learn about the California Gold Rush and the different groups of people who experienced this part of California history. Using evidence from their research, students determine if it was worth it to take part in the Gold Rush.
Driving Question: How can reflecting on the experiences of different cultures in California history impact my future?
Description: Students will learn about the different groups of people who came to California's Gold Rush (travelers from the east coast of the United States, Women, Chinese, and Native Americans), describe their experience and relate it to their own lives.
Driving Question: What types of relationships exist in an ecosystem?
Description: Students study different biomes and the way organisms interact in order to survive.
Driving Question: How can we teach about Ancient Greece and Greek mythology through a website?
Description: Students will learn about Ancient Greece and Greek mythology and then share their knowledge by creating a story, video game, and website to share their learning.
