Georgia Spiropoulos is a composer and multimedia artist. Her work includes acoustic, electronic, and mixed compositions, music theatre and multimedia works, and sound/video installations. It is characterized by its dramatic intensity and contrast between a powerful physicality and a meditative use of sound.
Spiropoulos’ musical language is a field of interaction among all kinds of sounds: extended instrumental techniques, singing and speaking voices, electronic sounds, field recordings and samples of pre-recorded music. She approaches composition as a laboratory of combined practices: musical text and orality, highly worked and raw materials, high technology and lo-fi electronics. The boundary between written music and oral transmission, a deliberately unstable state, is often the basis for her collaboration with virtuoso musicians—performers.
In her multimedia spectacles, the different arts co-exist organically: music, video, performance, physical movement, scenography, and lighting. She constructs these music-led interdisciplinary projects at multiple artistic levels, separately and in parallel, as a composer, director and video artist. In these works the performative-choreographic dimension of music performance is developed as a direct consequence of the sound production, its dramaturgy and urgency.
Georgia Spiropoulos taught music composition and electroacoustic music at McGill University in Montreal, Canada (2017–18) where she held the Schulich Distinguished Visiting Chair in Music and was the acting director of the Digital Composition Studios (DCS).
She has worked as a research composer at IRCAM on the project Mask: The voice transformations and computer tools for live performance (2008) where she further developed the idea and techniques of vocal masks. In 2013 she was named Chevalier de l' Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de la République Française and in 2022, she received the Coup de cœur award from the Académie Charles Cros for her CD Fonotopia. She has been awarded several residencies and grants, including from the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, the Villa Medici Hors-les-Murs (a residency in New York), and the Cité internationale des arts.
She has received many commissions (French Ministry of Culture, Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Culture, IRCAM-Centre Pompidou, Radio France, SACEM, Haus der Kulturen der Welt - Berlin, Marseille-Provence 2013 European Capital of Culture, Onassis Stegi) and her work has been performed by numerous ensembles (Ensemble Intercontemporain, L' Itinéraire, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, McGill Contemporary Music Ensemble, 2e2m, Ars Nova, Zafraan, Aventure, Curious Chamber Players, dissonArt, Accentus, Les Cris de Paris, Prism) in international venues: Centre Pompidou, Cité de la Musique, IRCAM, Auditorium du Louvre, Symphony Space, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, ZKM, Radial System V Gasteig München, AOI Concert Hall, Pollack Hall, Le Gesù, Felicja Blumenthal Music Center, Hateiva Hall, Concert Hall of the Academy of Music Krakow, Onassis Stegi, Megaron Concert Hall.
Georgia Spiropoulos studied classical and jazz piano and all disciplines surrounding music composition in Athens. At the same time, she also practiced traditional Greek music as an instrumentalist. Since 1996 she has lived in Paris where she studied composition and electroacoustic music with Philippe Leroux, form analysis with Michael Lévinas, computer
music at IRCAM with Jonathan Harvey, Tristan Murail, Brian Ferneyhough, Philippe Hurel, Marco Stroppa and Ivan Fedele, and Arts and Languages at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS). She regularly gives lectures on her work as an invited speaker at academic institutions around the world (Columbia University, McGill University, UCSB, Paris 7 and Paris 8, University of Crete, IRCAM, ICMC, SMC, Ars Musica Colloquium, Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, Paris Conservatory CRR). She has served as a jury member for the ICMC and SMC International Conferences, IRCAM and the music committees of the French Ministry of Culture – DRAC.

Έχει εργαστεί ως ερευνήτρια συνθέτρια στο IRCAM για το έργο Mask: The voice transformations and computer tools for live performance (2008), όπου ανέπτυξε περαιτέρω την ιδέα και τις τεχνικές των φωνητικών μασκών. Το 2013 ονομάστηκε Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de la République Française και το 2022 έλαβε το βραβείο Coup de cœur από την Académie Charles Cros για το CD της Fonotopia.
Έχει λάβει πολλές αναθέσεις έργων (French Ministry of Culture, Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Culture, IRCAM-Centre Pompidou, Radio France, SACEM, Haus der Kulturen der Welt - Berlin, Marseille-Provence 2013 European Capital of Culture, Onassis Stegi) και το έργο της έχει εκτελεστεί από πολυάριθμα σύνολα (Ensemble Intercontemporain, L'Itinéraire, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, McGill Contemporary Music Ensemble, 2e2m, Ars Nova, Zafraan, Aventure, Curious Chamber Players, dissonArt, Accentus, Les Cris de Paris, Prism) σε διεθνείς χώρους: Centre Pompidou, Cité de la Musique, IRCAM, Auditorium du Louvre, Symphony Space, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, ZKM, Radial System V, Gasteig München, AOI Concert Hall, Pollack Hall, Le Gesù, Felicja Blumenthal Music Center, Hateiva Hall, Concert Hall of the Academy of Music Krakow, Onassis Stegi, Megaron Concert Hall.
Δίνει τακτικά διαλέξεις για το έργο της ως προσκεκλημένη ομιλήτρια σε ακαδημαϊκά ιδρύματα σε όλο τον κόσμο (Columbia University, McGill University, UCSB, Paris 7 και Paris 8, University of Crete, IRCAM, ICMC, SMC, Ars Musica Colloquium, Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, Paris Conservatory CRR).

Zesses Seglias's compositional output centers on sound bodies and linguistic structures. A large part of his work focuses on the relationship between sound, voice, and its semiotics as defined by language. The majority of this output is intended for the stage, though his chamber music draws on the same idea. In his most recent works he pursues a unification of music and speech into a hybrid between sound and its meaning, described as spoken sound theatre. As a whole, his music is characterized by long-duration forms, a focus on sonic detail, narrative tools borrowed from other arts, a vocal character, strong contrasts with sporadic grotesque elements, and slow, static forms interspersed with high-density episodes.
The high point of Seglias's international career to date is the opera To the Lighthouse (2017), commissioned by the Bregenz Opera Festival in Austria, with a libretto by Ernst Binder after Virginia Woolf, which received warm recognition from magazines and newspapers such as Opernwelt, Süddeutsche Zeitung, and Frankfurter Allgemeine. This was followed by Not I in 2023, commissioned by the Greek National Opera, based on Samuel Beckett's monologue of the same name, in collaboration with the theatre group Zero Point and director Savvas Stroumpos.
These commissions came after years of intense activity by Seglias on the international scene:
in 2014 the mini-opera hystéra was presented at the Graz Opera under the direction of Beat Furrer, while in 2012, at the Time of Music festival in Viitasaari, Finland, he won first prize in the Einojuhani Rautavaara composition competition with his work [α-]. He has participated in numerous closed-format composition workshops, including Voix Nouvelles Royaumont, Tzlil Meudcan, Centre Acanthes, the Tchaikovsky Academy, the Darmstadt Summer Academy, the Impuls Academy, and Mixtur, among others.
His collaborations include commissions, premieres, and performances by internationally renowned ensembles and soloists such as D. Michel-Dansac, Hannah Weirich, Krassimir Sterev, Dimitris Polyzoidis, Christie Finn, Sophie Burgos, Jana Luksts, Klangforum Wien, MusikFabrik, Schallfeld Ensemble, Diotima Quartet, Phace, DissonArt, the Helsinki Chamber Choir, Exaudi, L'Instant Donné, Trio Amos, Vertixe Sonora, and others.
His work madrigali alla luce e al sangue (2021) was presented by the Phace ensemble under the direction of Nacho de Paz at the Imago Dei festival in Krems, Austria, and the same ensemble presented it again at the Aspekte festival in Salzburg, Austria, in 2022, under the direction of Lars Mlekusch. In 2014 his piece her (commissioned by the Impuls Academy) was featured in the celebratory concert for Beat Furrer's 60th birthday, organized and performed by Klangforum Wien under the direction of Peter Rundel, while in 2024 he took part in the anniversary concert for Furrer's 70th birthday at Radialsystem in Berlin, himself conducting KNM Berlin in the same piece. In 2018 the Musikfabrik ensemble recorded his work madrigali al vento e ai sospiri as part of the Composer Collider Europe program, funded by Creative Europe. Between 2020 and 2022 his trilogy Conversations was presented in New York, Toronto, and Vienna by Jana Luksts, the Longleash Trio, and the Schallfeld Ensemble.
He has maintained a steady collaboration with the Schallfeld ensemble and its principal conductor Leonhard Garms since 2015, culminating in the hour-long multimedia performance Namphaise in 2018 at Dom im Berg in Graz, Austria. In November 2025 the ensemble presented his work madrigali alla luce e al sangue as part of recording sessions for a monographic CD release funded by the Kostopoulos Foundation. In December 2026 the recordings will be concluded with a new work for female voice and large ensemble.
In April 2026 Seglias was commissioned by the Konzerthaus Wien in Austria to compose a music-theatre work titled Qu4d, based on Beckett's television piece Quad, in collaboration with the ensembles ExVoCo (Stuttgart) and Crossing Lines (Barcelona), funded by the Ernst von Siemens Foundation. In May of the same year, KNM Berlin gave the world premiere of Seglias's work …a drop on my fingers, two lips as a fuzz, a sun on our heads (is the pattern) for ensemble and lights at the Greek National Opera and in Berlin.
During the 2025–2026 academic year he curated and taught the Composing Sound Paintings program for children aged 5–10 at the Museum of Modern Art, funded by the Ernst von Siemens Foundation.
Seglias (born Edessa, 1984) studied composition and music theatre at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with Michalis Lapidakis, and at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria, with Beat Furrer. He studied alongside G. Aperghis, G. F. Haas, P. Billone, M. Andre, K. Lang, P. Ablinger, C. Czernowin, P. Hurel, M. Jarrell, J. Schöllhorn, B. Ferneyhough, and J. M. Sánchez-Verdú, among others.
He completed his doctoral dissertation and postdoctoral research at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki under Dimitris Papageorgiou. His studies and research have been funded by organizations including the IKY Foundation, the Onassis Foundation, and the EEM (Hellenic Composers' Union). He has taught music and composition at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the University of Macedonia, the University of Thessaly, and the University of Western Macedonia, as well as at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki and other conservatories in Greece. He has given lectures and taught seminars in Greece and abroad.
Since 2026 he is an Assistant Professor at the Preschool Education Department (University of Thessaly). His works are published by Gravis Editions and Babel Scores. He serves as Vice President of the EEM (Greek Composers' Union).

Τον Μάη του ίδιου έτους το σύνολο KNM Berlin παρουσίασε σε πρώτη εκτέλεση το έργο του Σέγκλια …a drop on my fingers, two lips as a fuzz, a sun on our heads (is the pattern) για σύνολο και φώτα στην Εθνική Λυρική Σκηνή και στο Βερολίνο.
