Environmental Education

WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION (EE)?

Environmental education focuses on a healthy environment by promoting awareness of how adults and children can live in a way that conserves resources for future generations.

Environmental education (EE) teaches children and adults how to learn about and investigate their environment, and to make intelligent, informed decisions about how they can take care of it. (NAAEE, What is Environmental Education?)

Environmental education does not advocate a particular viewpoint or course of action. Rather, environmental education teaches individuals how to weigh various sides of an issue through critical thinking and it enhances their own problem-solving and decision-making skills. (U.S. EPA, Environmental Education and Literacy)

WHY DOES ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION MATTER?

Environmental education programs reconnect children to nature in their backyards and around the world and foster an appreciation of the earth. Such education isn’t just good for the planet though—children who spend time outside have been proven to be happier and healthier. In addition, every industry, from information technology to manufacturing needs an environmentally-minded workforce to accelerate the transition to a sustainable economy. Health professionals with training in environmental issues will be better advocates for healthy hospitals and pollution controls. Business managers will have a better sense of the impacts of their supply chains and investments. With strong training, workers will be equipped to implement the clean technologies of the future.
