Abacus Calculation Tool
Abacus Math
We use the Japanese Soroban Abacus tool in the Math club. Abacus learning is one of the easiest and best ways to improve arithmetic skills and calculation fluency. Abacus math also helps develop an interest and passion in math for many students as their understanding and confidence grows from an early age. When a student learns to use an abacus, they use their hands and a tool with beads to calculate. It is believed movements using figures gives them an opportunity to activate the brain sensors.
Use of Abacus
It is used to perform addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. The beads are manipulated with the help of the index finger or the thumb of one hand. It removes fear about mathematics from the minds of students as it makes calculations easier. It helps the student develop the basic and important skills of listening, speed, concentration, accuracy, imagination, creativity, innovation, photographic ability etc. It also helps the students who suffer from dyslexia. Abacus improves their numerical skills where children learn through the sense of touching.
How does our brain work?
The brain consists of the right and left hemispheres. Both take on particular tasks. The left hemisphere is responsible for analytical and logical tasks, such as language and arithmetic. The right hemisphere specializes in dealing with images and is responsible, among other things, for photographic memory, creative thinking, concentration, and intuition.
Mental arithmetic increases the brain’s performance by better linking the brain hemispheres .The research has established the fact that the continuous practice of the Abacus can help develop the right side of the brain that is usually believed to be unused, thereby contributing to the development of the whole brain. It helps the individual improve their overall academic skills.
Grade-wise Math Program
Grade-Wise math is taught using the Singapore math method which is ranked in the top 3 in the world in the international education surveys. Singapore Math focuses on the quality of information learned rather than the quantity. Rather than expecting students to learn a variety of mathematical methods, this method teaches students to learn and master fewer mathematical concepts at greater detail as well as having them learn these concepts using hands-on learning and math manipulatives to solve the problems.
Singapore Math is developed around the idea that learning to problem-solve and develop mathematical thinking are the key factors to being successful in math.
Singapore Math differs from other math curriculums in its approach. Instead of rote memorization and drilling concepts through similar problems, Singapore Math teaches students how to mathematically think so that they can rely on the theory and build on concepts. Students from KG to 5th grade can join this course. Students in KG start with their grade level books of Singapore Math, while students from 1st grade and up take a placement test which covers important concepts and skills. The tests are used to measure the level of student’s readiness and focus on the topics they are struggling in. After finishing a level, the students are tested on their understanding of the topics taught and if needed a revision is done.
