What We're Learning This Term
English
Writing: Students will be focussing on descriptive and procedural writing. They will look at the structure and language features of procedural texts. Students will identify the purpose of procedural texts, and understand how it can vary in complexity and technicality depending on the approach to the topic, the purpose, and the intended audience. They will also practise their touch typing through 'Typing Club' to improve their efficiency when working on their devices.
Reading: Through reading daily, students will continue to develop their reading fluency and word recognition. Students will also strengthen and extend their comprehension skills focussing on summarising, monitoring, predicting, questioning, visualising, and making connections.
Spelling: Students will continue with the Spelling Mastery program. At the end of each week, they will participate in a spelling test.
Maths
In Maths, students will be focussing on number sense, statistics, and probability. They will apply their knowledge of the four operations, measurement, decimals and money as they participate in hands-on activities such as the Aussie Bird Count, making scale maps of familiar landmarks and working with money.
Science & STEM
We will continue to investigate properties of matter through Science and STEM. Students will work towards understanding that natural and processed materials have a range of physical properties and that these can influence their use. They will focus on applying their understanding of properties to find suitable materials for different uses. We will also investigate Earth’s surface and how it changes over time as a result of natural processes and human activity. In STEM, we participate in design challenges, using everyday materials to achieve a design goal.
Humanities - 'First Contacts'
Students will study the nature of contact between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the Europeans. They will explore the effects of these interactions, including issues regarding land ownership. Students will find historical information to determine the nature of colonial settlement, the effect of significant events, and the role of individuals in shaping a colony.
