What We're Learning This Term
English
Writing: Students will be focussing on informative writing. Students will look at the structure and language features of informative texts. They will research and gather information on their chosen topics, deciding what sources are trustworthy. Students will further refine their skills when writing descriptive snapshots, expanding their vocabulary and setting the scene for the reader. Students will also practise their touch typing through 'Typing Club' to improve their efficiency when working on their devices.
Reading: Through reading daily, students will continue to develop their reading fluency and word recognition. Students will also strengthen and extend their comprehension skills focussing on summarising, monitoring, predicting, questioning, visualising, and making connections.
Spelling: Students will continue with the Spelling Mastery program. At the end of each week, they will participate in a spelling test.
Maths
In Maths, students will be focussing on multiplication, division, fractions, percentages and money, investigating the 'real life' applications of this learning through problem solving.
Science & STEM
We will begin the term with our unit 'Smooth Moves' investigating contact and non-contact forces. In STEM we participate in design challenges, using everyday materials to achieve a design goal.
Humanities - 'Journeys of Discovery'
Students examine European exploration including individuals and groups who established contacts with Africa, the Americas, Asia and Oceania and throughout the world up to the early 1800s. Students will study the impact of exploration on other societies, how these societies interacted with newcomers, and how these experiences contributed to their cultural diversity. They will examine the journeys made by explorers using internet mapping tools, including the journeys of Christopher Columbus, Vasco de Gama, and Ferdinand Magellan.
