Learning Overview

Literacy

Reading: This term, students will be studying the novel Holes. As per last term, each week students will read a section of the book. To consolidate this knowledge and demonstrate their understanding of the characters, plot and themes within the book, students will then respond to comprehension questions. At the end of each week, students will be given time to discuss their thoughts and answers to questions in the form of 'book club'.

Writing: In term two, students will continue to explore the persuasive text type in the form of historical fiction. This will connect to our history topic of 'Australian Immigration'. Students will learn how to combine historical facts with a fictional twist to produce an application letter to enter Australia.

Mathematics

During the term, students will focus on the following topics: fractions, percentages, decimals; how they connect, and chance and probability. Students will take part in explicit teaching lessons that are differentiated, as well as open-ended activities.

Science: Chemical Reactions

During term two, students will focus on the way in which a range of chemicals react with each other and how external forces (light, heat, cold) can effect and agitate chemical reactions.

Humanities: History - Suitcase Stories

Students focus on Australia's colonial past and how this country has developed over time. Our main focus is the unit on 'Suitcase Stories'. During this, students will conduct up-close investigations into the lives of immigrants, between the first fleet and the start of World War 2, including their contribution to our culture and reasons behind immigrations.
