What We're Learning This Term
TERM 4 OUTLINE
English
Throughout our Literacy block, incorporating Spelling Mastery, Fluency Partners, Handwriting, Syntax Project, and Read 2 Learn, students have engaged in explicit instruction to strengthen their literacy skills.
Writing: Students will be focussing on writing narratives and persuasives this term. They will look at the structure and language features of these texts. Through the Syntax Project, students will continue to develop their sentence building skills as well as grammar and punctuation. They will continue to practise their handwriting on their way to receiving their pen licenses. Students will also practise their touch typing through 'Typing Club' to improve their efficiency when working on their devices.
Reading: Through reading daily, students will continue to develop their reading fluency and word recognition. Students will also strengthen and extend their comprehension skills focussing on summarising, monitoring, predicting, questioning, visualising, and making connections.
Spelling: Students will continue with the Spelling Mastery program. At the end of each week, they will participate in a spelling test.
Maths
In Maths, students will be focussing on number sense, statistics, and probability. They will apply their knowledge of the four operations, measurement, angles and money as they participate in hands-on activities such as the Aussie Bird Count, making scale maps of familiar landmarks and working with money.
Science - Weather & Water
Students will list sources of water on Earth, identify key processes in the water cycle, and describe how water can cycle through the environment. They will distinguish between weather and climate and explain how human activity can impact climate, and how these impacts may be reduced.
Humanities - 'First Contacts'
Students will study the nature of contact between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the Europeans. They will explore the effects of these interactions, including issues regarding land ownership. Students will find historical information to determine the nature of colonial settlement, the effect of significant events, and the role of individuals in shaping a colony.
