What We're Learning This Term
TERM 2 OUTLINE
English
Writing: Students will be focusing on informative and persuasive writing, exploring the purpose, structure, and key language features of each text type. In persuasive writing, they will develop clear opinions, support their arguments with evidence, and use persuasive techniques such as emotive language, rhetorical questions, and strong word choices to influence the reader. In informative writing, students will research and present factual information in a clear and organised way, using headings, logical sequencing, and relevant details while learning to identify trustworthy sources. They will also practise their typing skills to improve their efficiency and confidence when working on their devices.
Reading: Through reading daily, students will continue to develop their reading fluency and word recognition. Students will also strengthen and extend their comprehension skills focussing on summarising, monitoring, predicting, questioning, visualising, and making connections.
Spelling: Students will continue with the Spelling Mastery program. At the end of each week, they will participate in a spelling test.
Maths
In Maths, students will be focussing on multiplicative thinking, fractions and decimals, measurement, shape, statistics and probability, investigating the 'real life' applications of this learning through problem solving.
Science & STEM
We will begin the term with our unit investigating contact and non-contact forces. In STEM we participate in design challenges, using everyday materials to achieve a design goal.
Humanities - 'Journeys of Discovery'
Students examine European exploration including individuals and groups who established contacts with Africa, the Americas, Asia and Oceania and throughout the world up to the early 1800s. Students will study the impact of exploration on other societies, how these societies interacted with newcomers, and how these experiences contributed to their cultural diversity. They will examine the journeys made by explorers using internet mapping tools, including the journeys of Christopher Columbus, Vasco de Gama, and Ferdinand Magellan.
