Term Two Overview
YEAR 3 TIMETABLE
LEARNING OVERVIEW
Literacy
Reading:
Through reading daily, students will continue to develop their reading fluency and word recognition. Students will engage in Literature Circles, allowing them to practise various roles: Question Maker, Clarifier, Literary Observer, Predictor, Creator, Summariser, Director and Connector, which will help them better understand the text. Using a Reader’s Notebook, students will also participate in a whole class reading of a variety of books where they will be encouraged to make connections, share their ideas and make inferences from the texts.
Writing:
Students will be explicitly taught and have the opportunity to practise the purpose, structure and features of writing narratives, persuasives, information texts and procedures. Students will practise their editing skills and check for correct grammar, punctuation and spelling in their writing.
Spelling:
Following on from Year 2, students will be continuing with the Spelling Mastery Program. The program helps teach students dependable spelling skills by blending the phonemic, whole-word, and morphemic approaches.
Mathematics:
Our focus in Mathematics continues to be one that targets ‘real life’ skills. One of the aims of the program will be for students to understand the purpose and importance of Mathematics in their lives and be able to apply a range of concepts to understand what they encounter on a daily basis.
Humanities
Contributions to Community Development and Celebrations and Commemorations
This unit covers the influence of many cultures to local communities. It examines the role of diverse cultural backgrounds in the development of the local community and the way individuals and cultural groups have influenced change in the local community over time. Children will explore the similarities and differences in developments over time between two local communities (for example, leadership, sport, religious buildings, local architecture, languages, shops, restaurants).
Science
Melting Moments
Everyday we see or use things that have been melted or frozen, heated or cooled. In this unit students will investigate the properties of materials and how they change state under differing conditions. They will explore how solids and liquids are influenced by temperature and will conduct hands on investigations to discover how the size of the pieces affects the melting time of chocolate.
