About the author

S. E. Hinton (Susan Eloise Hinton) is an American author best known for writing The Outsiders. She was born in 1948, in Tulsa (USA) and began writing The Outsiders when she was only 15 years old. She felt that books at the time did not realistically portray the lives of teenagers. The novel was published in 1967 when she was 18 and became a major success, helping to establish modern young adult fiction. Hinton used her initials rather than her full first name because publishers believed a gender-neutral author name on the book cover would appeal to a wider audience. Hinton is widely credited with transforming young adult literature by writing about real teenage experiences, including social conflict, identity, friendship, and family struggles. Today, she is considered one of the most influential authors in young adult fiction.

About the novel

The Outsiders is a coming-of-age novel set in a small American city during the 1960s. The story follows Ponyboy Curtis, a teenager who belongs to a group of working-class youths known as the Greasers. The Greasers are often in conflict with a wealthier group called the Socs (short for Socials).

As Ponyboy navigates friendships, family relationships, and tensions between the two groups, he begins to question the stereotypes and divisions that separate people. The novel explores themes of loyalty, identity, belonging, social class, and the challenges of growing up.

Known for its realistic portrayal of teenage life and strong emotional impact, the book highlights how people from different backgrounds can have more in common than they initially realise.

Ponyboy Curtis - Ponyboy is the central character, and the narrator, of The Outsiders. He is fourteen. He has light-brown, almost red hair and greenish-grey eyes. He wears his hair long, and slicked back with grease, in the style of the 'greasers'. Ponyboy is smart, sensitive and good at school. But Ponyboy is a damaged individual, like the other boys. He ends up not only older but a lot wiser.

Jonny Cade - At sixteen, Johnny is the gang’s second-youngest and smallest member, recognisable by his dark skin, black eyes, and long, greased black hair styled with a shaggy fringe. Abused by his father and neglected by his mother, he is famously described as ‘a little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times. He fiercely hero-worships Dally.

Dally (Dallas) Winstone - Dally is the toughest member of the gang. He has been arrested and spent time in jail, became a street kid. He is more of a hood than a Greaser. He loves to drive fast and the only thing he really cares for deep down is Johnny. The death of Johnny destroys his will to live.

Darry (Darryl) Curtis - Tall, broad-shouldered, and muscular, Darry looks older than his years, with dark brown hair. While he enjoys fighting to show off his muscles and strength, he deeply values family, friendship, and making good. Recognising that street life offers no future, he pushes Ponyboy to excel at school, believing education and a respectable job are the true keys to success.

Sodapop - He is almost 17, but slimmer and not as tall as Darry. Soda had girlfriend named Sandy. He wanted to marry her, but her parents sent her off to her grandmother's as they felt she was too young to have a serious relationship. He loves gang fights because of the action but somehow he hates the constant fighting between Darry and Ponyboy. They make him feel 'as if he was being split in two'. He is always there for Ponyboy.

Two-Bit Mathews - Two-Bit (real name is Keith) received his nick-name because he wouldn't shut up and always got his two-bits in. He is eighteen and he is six feet tall and he is very proud of his long rusty-coloured side burns. Life is one big joke to him and he only goes to school just for kicks. Two-bit likes fights, blondes and stuffing around at school. He is famous for shop-lifting and his black-handled switchblade knives.

Steve Randle - Steve is seventeen years and Soda's best mate. He is tall and lean, with thick greasy hair. He is cocky and smart. He knows a lot about cars and he could drive anything on wheels. He works part-time at the same gas station as Soda. Steve fights for hatred.
