In addition to their individual work this semester, Unit 1 Art students created a soft sculpture installation inspired by the work of sculptors Hiromi Tango, Annette Messager and Yayoi Kusama.
Teachers and students donated second-hand textiles and clothing for us to work with. The students experimented to see the kinds of forms and textures they could create.
They used hand stitching, stuffing and binding to make whimsical organic forms, and finger knitting and plaiting to create long strings and ropes. The work was installed in a small corridor that leads to our darkroom.
Teams of students worked together to hang the installation. Fairy lights were added at the end to add to the playful and mysterious atmosphere we had created . This was a fun and playful project to explore the potential of sculpture as an artform.
Below are some images of the completed work and the making process.
